yRead will load a plain text (TXT) or HTML file and display it in a single-column, resizable window. Then it will read the file to you out loud, using human speech. yRead now includes a catalog screen for the online Gutenberg archive - it will retrieve the latest catalog, show you a sorted list of all titles and allow you to pick, download and listen to any of them. yRead includes a translation table (see the help file). This enables you to build a series of phonetic spellings so that mispronounced words will come out correctly. This is a fairly dumb string replace, so if you replace 'e' with 'x' you'll havx to livx with the consxquxncxs.

Aimed at computer users who are tired of reading, or who can't see the screen, yRead reads text files or Web pages out loud. The program does an adequate job of interpreting texts, but its monotone robot voice certainly won't win any dramatic acting awards. Based on Microsoft Reader Text-to-Speech, the program offers minimal additional features. Its austere interface can be awkward to use, with few tools such as bookmarks, and sentence or paragraph skipping that would aid in browsing a text. Nor can the program save texts directly into archived sound files. On the bright side, yRead is integrated directly with Project Gutenberg library online, giving immediate, free access to thousands of books in digital form. Overall, yRead does have the advantage of being free in a market where most rivals are commercial products, but computer users who plan to spend much time interacting with their computer this way will likely want to invest in a more convenient experience.
