Browser toolbars increasingly put a wealth of convenient features at a Web surfer's fingertips, but they can come at a price. WordIQ Toolbar bundles several potentially useful functions into an Internet Explorer add-on, offering a Web search tool, a button for checking a POP3 e-mail account, and a pop-up ad blocker. Each is limited, however. The search function only uses Google's engine and the e-mail function can only check a single account, and the pop-up blocker froze our browser when we activated it. The toolbar also provides links to an e-book archive and a searchable encyclopedia provided by the company. Users should take care to read the software's privacy policy, which explains that the distributors will collect "non-personal identification information" by using cookies and tracking IP addresses. If that's not a concern, the toolbar may well provide some useful browsing features.
