Editor's review

Hats off to sharp-eared listeners who recognize the riff force behind Pin Me Down--that's none other than Bloc Party's Russell Lissack slinging axe. PMD is Lissack paired with Milena Mepris, and fans of the Kills and the Ting Tings will find an addiction in the pop ends of its post-punk means.

Biography

PIN ME DOWN SET TO RELEASE THEIR DEBUT SINGLE "CRYPTIC" JUNE 3 ON KITSUNE.

Kitsuné Maison is proud to announce the release of Pin Me Down’s incredible debut single, "Cryptic." It will be released digitally on June 3rd, 2008 in North America, preceded by a 12" vinyl release on May 26th in Europe.

"Cryptic" is the first taste of the fruits of Pin Me Down, a collaboration between London-based lead guitarist Russell Lissack (of Bloc Party) and New York-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Milena Mépris, which began after the two met when Mépris’ former band Black Moustache supported Bloc Party. Impressed by one another’s guitar skills, and mutual love for ‘80s and ‘90s acts like Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, New Order, Weezer, and Smashing Pumpkins, the pair decided to explore new frontiers together, fusing energetic pop vocals and melodies with the guttural, razor-sharp guitar sounds of the unknown, or "apocalyptic pop," as Mépris likes to call it. Due to their packed touring and music schedules, the pair worked from different parts of the globe using the internet and digital recording programs to email each other songs, while honing their sonic ideas and songwriting in the process. The project naturally evolved.

"Cryptic" was produced by 2008 Grammy Award Nominated producer Alex Elena, who also played drums, and the single features remixes by Phones (Paul Epworth, producer to Bloc Party, Futureheads, Kate Nash, remixer to New Order, U2, Goldfrapp), Jamie Ellis (Battle) & Russell Lissack.

Tracklisting:

1. Cryptic (original)

2. Cryptic Repuzzled (Jamie Ellis & Russell Lissack mix)

3. Cryptic Phones Materialisation Mix (Paul Epworth)

"Cryptic" first appeared on February 2008’s Kitsuné Maison 5 Gold Compilation beside Fischerspooner, M.I.A., Yelle, and Late of the Pier, and Pin Me Down attracted special attention from critics and fans. NME called Mépris, "a rock goddess in-the-making" and describes "Cryptic" as an "anthemic floorfiller… with killer pop hooks." Pitchfork Media described "Cryptic" as one of "the compilation’s several successes," referring to it as "pop majesty." The band received additional rave reviews from Dazed and Confused, Drowned In Sound, The Times (of London), Pop Justice, and MTV.
