Data Nuker is a stylish application effectively shreds files, folders, and free space with five algorithms on command or by schedule, and does it for free.

Some utilities offer two or three shredding methods, but Data Nuker shreds using the DoD Standard, NAVSO RLL, NAVSO MFM, and German Standard algorithms. Suited best for different situations, the app gives clear guidance as to which algorithm is best for the drive type in question. It wont automatically pick a standard, however, so those hoping for a click-and-forget-it experience might want to look elsewhere.

The skinnable interface defaults to an attractive tabbed GUI that clearly presents the numerous features. Files and folders can be shredded by drag and drop, context-menu selection, explorer-style browsing, or by schedule. Folder shredding is supported by helpful prompts for subfolder configuration, contents, and removal. You can easily shred entire hard drives or free space to improve drive security, and the scheduling tool makes it effortless to automate shredding tasks.

Every level of user will find this effective freeware one of the more flexible and efficient shredders offered. When we retested the app in response to user complaints about malware, we found that it was a clean and safe program to use.

"Doesn't anyone read small print anymore?"

by the 1 knight on February 12, 2007

    Pros: No comment

Cons: The Cnet editor has commented that following investigations, they believe this product to be clean of parasites. I for one have no reason to doubt that and as a rule, I usually trust their word over that of people who leave negative comments without either doing proper investigation or reading small print.

The publsher of this software has a nice web site, with all the bells and whistles that should tell you they have some idea about what they are doing. Software development, like all technology has moved on these days. There are ways of installing safe advertising within software programs. IE: news pages etc.

The terms and conditions posted at this products download page clearly state that a form of advertising will be installed with this product. Not that I think anything devious of that suggestion however, I prefer not to have that facility on my systems therefore I have opted to look elsewhere for a similar product.

My cridentials? Software consultant. That's testing, reviews and recommending for those not reading this properly. Not development. Freewareontrial!

    "Works but requires work."

by Nibinaearr on January 27, 2008

Pros: This software lets you shred files, shred your recycle bin and shred free space on a drive using the US DOD and other recommended standards. It does this really well.

Cons: I've had lots of problems using the software, including my "music tasks" such as "play selection" and "play all" not working for audio. If you want to fix this you have to get an app called shellexview and follow these instructions to disable the Zilldatanuker context menu entry:

    windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

"Free" can also be taken with a pinch of salt with this app. Every time you load it up it says "trial version of active skin control", whatever that means,

Its also not that attractive. The skin looks as though it came from a 1999 GUI or something.

Finally, it doesn't let you shred the free space on an SD memory stick, it only works on drives.

I would still recommend it because it does the job, but at a price and it definitely needs improving.
