Editor's review of YAMP
This multipurpose audio tool may initially appear unimpressive, but it has a number of cool features under the hood. YAMP's small, nonresizeable interface has a rather primitive appearance, but once you expand the left-pane menu items to browse all your options, it's clear there's more than meets the eye. The program can both rip CDs and convert audio files, but those two features are actually the weakest links. The CD ripper only extracts tracks as WAV files and can't retrieve song information from the Web, while the converters only support OGG and MP3 to WAV and vice versa.
However, it's YAMP's unexpected and unique audio tools that really help give it a boost. A sampler utility extracts only a certain portion of a track, though it's a shame you can't use sliders to determine the exact cutting points. The WAV and MP3 players strangely aren't integrated into the same module, but both offer a 10-band EQ, preamps, pans, and visualizations. Other tools include a mixer, a few audio filters, a normalization utility, and a very basic recorder, though all of these only are compatible with WAV files. It may not be the best designed program around, but YAMP's versatility makes it worth considering, particularly for those who mainly deal with uncompressed audio files.
