This Microsoft freeware effectively points out potential problems before upgrading your system to Windows Vista, but adds a heavy dose of marketing. Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor's interface is 10 percent program, and 90 percent advertisement for the operating system.

Implementing the check takes a single click, but is resource-intensive. Your system will grind as Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor checks your hardware and software. It isn't a fast check, but the program's marketing side offers Vista information to read while you wait. Eventually, a screen appears that lets you know if your system is ready for Vista, and which version would work best. The utility helpfully lists potential problems with your devices and programs. The program also details problems with upgrading to a different version of Vista than the one recommended.

Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is easy to use, causes no harm beyond a little system sluggishness during the evaluation, and offers helpful information to any user considering an upgrade to Windows Vista.

  If you are upgrading to Vista, this test is for you

  Pros: Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor scans your whole computer and tells you if your pc can handle the new Vista os. If your pc fails the test, it will recommend what you need to upgrade to meet the Vista minimum requirements. Mine passed the test with flying colors, except for my old Lexmark printer.

  Cons: Depending on what version of Vista you chose, the cost of the disk is $200-$400. I am sure these prices will come down by summer, but right now they are kind of steep.

  Check Compatibility With Vista

  Pros: Easy to install and uninstall and causes no harm to other programs as far I can see. Be aware that if WVUA no information about a hardware or a software has you cannot ignore this when upgrading to Vista, on the contrary to the to do list of WVUA. You can also use WVUA on Windows Vista (except Enterprise Edition and only 32-bit Editions of XP and Vista) to see if a program or hardware compatible is with Vista.

  Cons: Sometimes my printer (HP 940c) is OK and then later WVUA has no information about this printer. So I am not sure about this.

  Pros: Tells you if your computer is Windows�® vista capable.

  Cons: You will need internet access in order for them to examine your system. And, you will have to install .NET framework in order to install. And Windows�® Vista upgrade version does not work on old versions of Windows like Windows 95/98/Me/win2k. this will only work for Windows�® XP however, the full version works on any version of Windows�®.

  Good idea, bright marketing, but doesn't work

  Pros: Genuine Windows check is removed, installation smooth. Design is improved comparing to previous versions.

  Cons: It gives me error message and suggests to install "the latest version". No other explanation. I give it one star, because of this error and odd error message. You can reduce Vista customer number by one.

  Cons: windows vista upgrade advisor has encountered an error while scanning your system. If the problem persists, you can uninstall windows vista upgrade advisor and reinstall the latest version. AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS EVEN AFTER THAT
