Vocaboly is an award-winning vocabulary builder for SAT, TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT tests and for general vocabulary building. Vocaboly contains five books--SAT, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, and VOA Special English--with 12,000 words, each provided with meaning, phonetic symbol, and pronunciation. You can select a book according to your purpose and English level, and you can create your own books and enjoy all the creative features.

Each book contains eight flash cards for focusing on specified words. Each word can be assigned to a difficulty level of 0 to 5. Each user has his or her own study record and software setting, which is saved automatically when you quit the program. Study methods include a word ticker, recall, spelling, listening, multiple choice, memory game, and a Star Wars game.

Editor's review of Vocaboly

This program helps strengthen your vocabulary in preparation for a variety of exams. After installation, Vocaboly prompts you to choose whether you're taking the TOEFL, the GMAT, the SAT, the GRE, or the VOA Special English. The clear and direct interface lists all your study options on the main window's left side. We were impressed by the number of ways Vocaboly can help you learn. For example, you can have words and meanings randomly tick across your screen, take a multiple-choice test, spell words when given their definitions, and play several games. The only complaint we have is that the app's speech engine failed to work when we asked it to pronounce a word. You can study the app's entire database of words at once, or you can choose to concentrate on specific sections. Although the trial version doesn't let you access the program's entire word list, we think Vocaboly will assist a wide range of users studying for a number of tests.

Vocaboly

Horrible Software :(

Pros: Absolutely nothing. :(

Cons: My operating system is Windows XP Service Pack 2 and this is the first time I've had a program not only crash my computer, but it also forced me to operate in Safe Mode to uninstall it.

After reading the Editor's positive review this software sounded like a bargain at $39.95 (yes, $39.95 is the price I paid). I'm just thrilled to get it deleted from my machine without having to hire a techy to get rid of it.

At first there was just the problem of the software not accepting my registration information. Then I noticed the desktop had turned completely white. I thought a simple reboot would solve the problem--WRONG. The misery had just begun. :( The computer got into a loop where once it reached the white desktop it would shutdown again on its own. This had me very worried especially since the startup and shutdown process were taking a lot longer than normal. Fortunately, the F8 (Safe Mode) option worked and this nasty software, Vocaboly, hadn't messed up everything completely. I uninstalled Vocaboly and presto my machine was working perfect again--Hopefully every bit of Vocaboly is gone.

I figure getting a refund of my $39.95 plus an apology or at least tech suggestions would be a piece of cake---WRONG. Once Vocaboly has taken your money that is it. Forget about an apology or tech support or a refund. This company is nasty from its software to its administration. I am disputing the charge and Vocaboly will be hearing more about this. Yes, I know it is only $39.95, but the time and trouble it has caused goes way beyond that.

I'm very surprised no one else has reviewed this software positive or negative given that Editor's review was so positive. I'm thinking maybe negative reviews had to be deleted to due to threat of legal action. I feel like suing Vocaboly for their defective product and lack of customer service.

Bottom line: I'm a lot less willing to buy new software thanks to Vocaboly. :(
