VisualCatalogues Enterprise allows one or several people concurrently to create, maintain, update, and publish, in full or in part, multiple searchable catalogs or unlimited numbers of records, each record being represented with images (in three sizes: thumbnail, large, and extra-large), movies (JPEG, MPEG, and WMV), or multimedia records, with full textual notes and descriptions, and search keywords. Catalog records can be organized via a drag-and-drop interface into categories and subcategories up to seven levels deep. Publish at a click in full or in part to a local or networked drive to burn a CD-ROM, DVD, or CD business card, or upload to a Web site with built-in FTP functionality. Both the Windows and the Java (platform-independent) viewers are included for free distribution, and each has a powerful search engine allowing users to search on visual and other properties, as well as on other criteria including date, price, and part number, if applicable.

Designed to publish catalogs to CDs, DVDs, networks, business cards, or to the Web, VisualCatalogues Enterprise disappoints in both performance and design. Although the main window is basic, its lack of graphics, backgrounds, and color lend it a bland feel. Worse still, you'll probably need the tutorial to understand how to input information into the confusing interface. We also wondered why the app forced us to create two databases, one before and one after launch. Even though we liked this program's powerful keyword-search capabilities, we found its lack of photo support frustrating. Finally, the trial version disables publishing, one of this application's key features. We think most users who need a utility such as this should look elsewhere.
