Version: Vista64FirewallControl 2
"Best of the 64 Bit Firewalls"
Pros: Simple yet effective software that enhances the built-in Vista firewall. I've used Zone Alarm for years which has always been outstanding but for some reason they can't seem to come out with software for the 64 bit. Looks like they have been dabbling with a 64 bit beta version for almost 2 years now and then pulled it. So with a new computer, I found myself searching around for some added protection. I really see only two "free" alternatives (no Norton 360 for me): Vista64FirewallControl and Ghostwall (not found on download.com). I felt much more confident that Vista64Firewall was the least complicated and best choice. Until something else comes along (are you listening Zone Alarm?), I feel secure with this product.

Version: Vista64FirewallControl 2
"Low resource usage, easy to use."
Pros: I've been using this on Vista Ultimate x64 since Jan 2007 when Vista was released. It uses the built in Vista Firewall API's to control all programs' internet access. Because of this, it has an extremely low ram/cpu footprint. It enables outbound protection and pops up whenever a new program requires internet access and then lets you create rules to allow or deny access on a one time basis, or to create a permanent rule for that application. Because it uses Vista's own firewall technology, it's a surprisingly successful stealthing firewall, as Vista's firewall is considerably more secure than that in XP SP2/SP3. It also works well with Vista SP1, as expected. Some users like more complex firewalls like ZA, Comodo, Outpost etc., and at one point so did I, but when I made the switch to Vista after running beta's in 2006, I knew what Vista's built in security had to offer (particularly on the 64bit versions) and decided to go with something much more simple and far less resource hungry.
