  Ubuntu Desktop

  An amazing internet story, and a great program in the end...

  Pros: In 2004, the astronaut dictator for life (whatever his name is) started a foundation that decided that it would create the best OS ever made, but that it would be free in every aspect of the word. It would be free as in "free beer," but as in "free editing" as well, giving it a license that is unique and all the better.

  I had never fired up Linux about a month ago; I tried Slax, which I heartily suggest for first-time users. It's a LiveCD that is really easy and uses an excellent interface (called KDE) that will help out Linux newbies. But past that, I eventually realized that I started enjoying Slax more than Window XP itself, and that I should start looking into this as a serious venture. A quick google search brought me to the most popular Linux flavor, Ubuntu.

  After messing up the CD a few times, I finally fired up Ubuntu...and I was amazed. An amazing design, excellent programs, and simply put, effort. Love from the community and professionals who dedicate their lives to this program as a hobby pours out of every pore, something that Windows will never have. User suggestions are implemented, and everything is so streamlined and simple, I was in love.

  I didn't actually install it, though, until I got my Wi-Fi cards hooked up with a simple copy-and-paste job of my WEP Key from my browser. No drivers, and soon after my LiveCD was cruising with stuff I wanted to try. Too bad Ubuntu isn't a very good LiveCD OS, because I really wanted to do so much!

  Honestly, if you are interested in computers even the slightest, download Ubuntu (grab the official version, though, on the site). It's so much better, faster, and wilder than Windows, and it makes everything so easy.

  Cons: I really think that Ubuntu needs to have internet for a day or two to get things moving (drivers, games, programs, help and configuration, et.c) so if you plan on installing on a computer without internet, I suggest finding a different OS, or at least finding something that will allow you to stick drivers on a separate CD (one of the little things about Ubuntu...everything downloaded is installed right away. You don't see the packages).

  And this file is an iso file (or so I believe) which some users may not understand how to use. But there are a lot of pages for Ubuntu on how this works, so that's a minor thing. (It's basically a picture of a CD that just needs to be burnt). I also strongly suggest grabbing some videos from the Ubuntu Screencast site for some really good visual help.

  Download Ubuntu. It was the best CD I ever burnt. The astronaut dictator will thank you.

  Among the best of the Linux distros out there!!!!

  Pros: I have been using Linux for years, but mainly ones based on KDE. I got bored one year and downloaded over 80 distros to try them out. When going along, I found Ubuntu was a very clean, ease of use, and jam packed distro. I have been using Ubuntu for over 3 years and love it. Ubuntu has acomplished the task of the easy to run and install distro. For new users to Linux, you can try Ubuntu without installing it, then if you fall in love with it like I did, you will install it to your hard drive. Ubuntu also has accomplished to have a distro with a full, easy-to-install program list. With many Linux distros, you have to manually start and install updates and other hardware. But, Ubuntu has succeeded in making these task automatic and easy.   The best all-around Linux distribution for users at ANY level.

  Pros: It will hold your hand if you're new to Linux and do it's best to keep you from the "scary" command line.

  It is Debian at heart and if you're an experienced Linux user, you can tweak to your hearts content. Skip the hand-holding and dive right in..Uber-Geek style!

  Cons: It leaves it's sister distribution, Kubuntu (KDE desktop instead of GNOME) in the dust. Ubuntu gets all the glory and Kubuntu is euqally good (if not better, depending on your preferences).

  Missing something here

  Cons: Am missing something somewhere with this software. Have downloaded this OS at least twice and transferred to CD and have attempted to install on 3 different computers that far exceed the minimum requirements and the system continues to evade installation. I have spent hours and hours searching Ubuntu forums and following links and cannot find instructions ANYWHERE to what must be the very first step. Have formatted and reloaded Windows XP and created partitions as I understand I must create and have also attempted to format and install Ubuntu as the sole OS. I'm just missing a step in the process somewhere. I guess if someone cannot figure how to install the OS, they would also be unable to use it if someone else installed it for them so I have given up on Ubuntu!!!!

  Have it on my laptop, so easy to use.

  Pros: I had Ubuntu installed into my laptop and it works so much faster and better than Windows. It comes with various options, a lot more programs already installed than Windows, and is totally spyware and virus free! Ubuntu never crashes, and has updates all the time, and this OS is FREE!

  Cons: Not many programs work with it, which is another reason why I didn't download it to my desktop.
