Editor's review of TurboZIP Compression Suite

A reliable compression tool for folks wanting an alternative to WinZip, TurboZip is user friendly and easy to master. (Warning: You must provide some minimal personal information to register the tool before it will install.) The TurboZip interface has a familiar three-paned appearance similar to that of e-mail programs like Microsoft Outlook. One pane lists the archives you've created; the second pane reveals a list of the files in the archive you select; and the third pane displays the contents of the file you choose, much like a preview pane. A wizard leads you through creating an archive, which you can save in a variety of formats including ZIP, RAR, and self-extracting EXE files, so even novices will have no difficulties. The utility performed well in our tests. Although TurboZip offered different compression levels, there was little file size difference in the resulting archives, no matter which level we used. However, even the default compression setting for TurboZip (midway between highest and lowest) created an archive smaller than WinZip's maximum level of compression, and smaller is better in zip utilities. Any level of user will find TurboZip a handy and simple compression program to add to their system's toolbox.

  TurboZIP Compression Suite

  Awsome zip utility!

  Pros: Works on all kinds of compression format (file extensions), e.g. zl6 which my WinZIP version does not recognize. Does all that WinZIP and WinRAR do. Appears to be most comprehensive.

  Cons: This is not a pain but nice to have what WinZIP does (I think WinRAR too). When I right click a .zip file in Windows Explorer, the context submenu (or menu) shows "Extract to folder_name" where folder_name is the folder of the .zip file, say x.zip, but doe not show "Extract to folder_name/x" for extracting multiple zip files into separate sub-folders.

  I am sure that a future version will likely add this as TurboZip gains wider popularity.

  Pros: It's user friendly, easy to understand, easy to download and there's no backing up 10 cd's for 1 program!

  TurboZIP Compression Suite

  Not exactly what I was looking for.

  Pros: It's fine if your business needs it or you're a technical person archiving a lot of files.

  Cons: When you install it, you get options of up to 3 different programs!? Is that really necessary? Also, you can't completely uninstall one of the 3 programs for some technical reason.

  I tried to uninstall it, which didn't work. Then I erased the TurboZip folder. I went to the View menu to select "Details," and I still get zip files listed as "TurboZip Express File" instead of "WinZip" or "PowerArchiver."

  I'm using the trial version of PowerArchiver and then I'll buy PowerArchiver. Neither PowerArchiver nor TurboZip is able to unzip a Macintosh file on a PC. The last time I checked, WinZip wasn't able to unzip a Macintosh zipped file either.

  I'm looking into buying Dark Castle 3, which is a Macintosh program. I wanted to see if there's a Macintosh emulator that works. To make a long story short, that's why I wanted to unzip the beta demo Macintosh files on a PC. Someday I want to buy a Macintosh with programs like Final Cut Pro.
