Publisher's description of TuneRanger 0.9 build 270

From Acertant Technologies:

TuneRanger connects iTunes-running computers over a network, allowing music, video, and playlists to be copied from one iTunes library to another seamlessly. TuneRanger even works across platforms letting iTunes on Windows communicate and synchronize with iTunes on Mac in any combination. TuneRanger offers true synchronization. It compares songs and videos on all computers and only copies changes. It does this for playlists, ratings, play counts, and more.

Version 0.9 build 270 fixed several bugs in the new metadata (ratings, playcounts) synchronization; fixed the last played date so it works with European format dates, fixed sync issues between Mac and Windows and certain mp3 files.

    Version: TuneRanger 0.9 build 270

    "Yes, it works, but..."

by dwandelt on July 4, 2008

Pros: It does do what it says (after a fashion, more or less), which is functionality that's overdue.

Cons: The interface is hardly intuitive (and I have a LOT of experience), and rather quirky. For example, by default it opens a log window that in my case (my machines and iTunes setup are not anything out of the ordinary) listed a ton of error messages. Close the window (to limit the "noise"), and it reopens it at the next stage of the operation. Then there's a lot of little quirks, like that the progress bar doesn't progress while it's running! Like it takes a long time (a minute or two) to start up before you can start telling it what you want it to do. And not copying folders that I had created, just the playlists that were in them. (That should have been a tip-off; if you create a playlist inside a folder, it must have a different name than any playlist outside of a folder, or TuneRanger will give you grief about it).

Lots of little stuff that can be annoying, but in the end, it *did* do what it was supposed to: Make the iTunes on Machine B look (mostly) like the one on Machine A. But I haven't yet tried to do anything 'special', just make the iTunes on a new MacBook Pro look like the one on the old iMac 24.

In the end, is it worth twenty bucks? Probably. But not a penny more, in its present condition! I should have known better than to buy version 1.0 without reading the reviews first.
