This tool quickly translates Web sites into several languages, although it has some trouble with specialized texts. Translator places a button in the lower-right corner of your Firefox browser. To translate a site, simply choose the language you are translating from and to on the pull-up menu. The application automatically launches another tab with the translated text or you can opt to show it in the current tab or a new window. The program uses online translation engines such as Google Translation, BabelFish, and AltaVista and supports English, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Unlike some Web-based utilities, it can also translate other languages such as Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese. We like the way entire Web page translations took mere seconds to complete and that it preserves the original look and formatting of the pages. The bad news, however, is that the translations of languages with specialized texts were poor: we only saw question marks. Although it is a Firefox extension, we'd like to see this one extended to other browsers. This handy freebie saves surfers and Web builders the time and effort it takes to manually launch translation sites.
