GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is. The latest update is robust enough to have earned a full-point upgrade, although it's merely a jump from 2.2 to 2.4.

One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include scalable brushes, revised selection tools, a new color menu, full-screen editing, a new crop tool, improved printing, red eye removal, perspective clone, lens distortion, and more. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.

The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

  Pros: I might be wrong but GIMP si like Photoshop, but FREE and EASY to work.

  WOW! A GEM OF AN IMAGE EDITING PROGRAM!

  Pros: I'm a nut for good freeware and this one is another gem!

  If you use Photo Shop or Corel you will find this not only comparable in versatility and functionality, but you will be kicking yourself in the rear for paying so much for what you can get with this - for free!

  As with OpenOffice, this is an open-sourced program. There may be a few bugs but I haven't found any yet.

  I'm not only thrilled to be able to find worthwhile programs like this for free, I am far happier donating a few bucks for the ride on this bus than shelling out hundreds for products that at best only match this one.

  Cons: Just takes a bit getting use to. After you figure out the mechanics, it's go go go!

  Best Alternative to Photoshop

  Pros: It has enough Photoshop Features to make it a very good image editing program.

  Cons: Still doesn't have a lot of Photoshop's features.

  Doesn't have an EXTENDED version with 3D features.

  Amazing!

  Pros: I've been using photoshop for about two years now and it is an amazing program. It took some time getting used to, but once you learn you just can't stop. This program is in so many ways comparable to photoshop it's not even funny. I can't believe it's free! If that's not enough, if you're a good programmer you could fix some of the bugs yourself because it's open source.

  Cons: so far there is nothing to complain about.
