This promising XTML document creator is torpedoed by a lack of adequate help. At first glance, Tangram XTML Designer's interface is an exercise in simplicity. However, opening menus, invoking functions, and adding features can quickly result in a mess of windows, tabs, and items. Looking to the publisher for a Help file or manual will disappoint users. The single page of examples without explanation will confuse users more than it will help. And, during our tests, the publisher's Web site was unavailable.
Tangram XTML Designer's installation process includes separate installations for Windows Installer, Visual C++ modules, and Microsoft .NET. Still, the convoluted process isn't as difficult as using the program. On open, the app is bare bones. A simple document is displayed with no indication where to start. Experienced XTML designers will thread their way through pop-up menus, and feature buttons to design simple XTML documents and Internet Explorer plug-ins. Other users will quickly give up in frustration. All those who stick to playing with and learning this designer will find additional problems. Our testers often watched as the program would crash while saving documents or opening select modules. We couldn't find a rhyme or reason to the random crashes.
If you know XTML, don't mind wasting time creating documents lost on a crash, and find joy in ferreting out the functions of undocumented software, then give Tangram XTML Designer a test. At most you'll simply waste some time as the utility is freeware and easily uninstalled. If you actually want to get things done, though, you should pass on this flawed program.
