Publisher's description of Talking Maritime Encyclopedia
From SEAWISDOM: You always have been fascinated by the seas and ships. You always have wanted to know more about them. Learn all about the seas and ships and learn it well. Listen to the Talking Maritime Encyclopedia. It is a software program with maritime words and their explanations with associated diagrams. A character Mari is the guide who speaks the words and their meanings to you. This software in Visual Basic is very easy to use, very attractive, and is intended for all associated with the sea and its crafts.Editor's review of Talking Maritime Encyclopedia
If you love the ocean, you ought to enjoy Talking Maritime Encyclopedia. The program presents hundreds of nautical terms, from A.B. (able-bodied seaman) to Zulu time (another term for GMT). You can search the entire database or browse by letter. An animated character named Mari reads the written definitions out loud in a British voice. Mari's diction isn't very smooth, and sometimes she asks how she can help without providing a way for the user to answer. You easily can hide and show her from the system-tray icon.
You can find many definitions in a regular dictionary, but in most cases this program provides more specific information. For example, you know posh means wealthy, but did you know it started as an acronym for the way rich British people traveled by sea (port outward, starboard homeward)? We would like to see the ability to view grouped terms, such as all the flags or all the knots. The program takes quite a while to install because it includes Microsoft Agent, the agent file Vrgirl, and a Lernout & Hauspie voice. Talking Maritime Encyclopedia appeals to sailors and aspiring seafarers.
