Though this oddly named video converter is much more narrowly focused than many in its class, it's easy to use, functional, and free. TMPGEnc's gray interface will never win any design accolades, but since it works entirely in step-by-step mode, we doubt most users will get confused. Basically, the program converts AVI files into various flavors of MPEG optimized for DVD, VideoCD, and Super VideoCD. For a freebie, this one gives you a surprisingly large amount of control over your new file. For instance, you can convert in interlaced or noninterlaced modes; change the aspect ratio and size; apply noise reduction; crop edges; and extract certain portions of a clip. TMPGEnc also lets you set the video quality and apply different filters. As long as you don't regularly need to encode video files in a codec other than MPEG, you'll find this one to be well worth considering.

Flexible conversion but capricious behavior

Pros
Allows much manipulation from input to output, such as color correction, frame clipping, forced audio for flexibility in making DVDs, source format specification (useful with ineptly made source files), good batch mode.
Cons
Hit or miss "unsupported format" errors that have nothing to do with installed codecs (as rendering is OK through graphedit, etc). Lack of control and information over codec selection makes this problem essentially insurmountable in many cases.
Summary
I use this program all the time for converting to a format usable in a DVD, but I feel I am constantly fighting its strange and annoying behavior. The other converters I have looked at don't offer the flexibility of this program in processing the source video however, so I stick with it. Interface can be annoying in its declining to remember things like file sort and display preferences.

I used this for a long time unfortunately i need ALL vids as AVI XVID to play on player but if i used MPG this is way to go i DO sometimes convert things to mpg cut/join then convert bak to avi

No need to install (unzip and run), Runs smooth and fast, Dependable I've been using for 3 years on XP and the new release on Vista for 5 months with no problems, Clips video as well.
Cons
Needs to be able to handle more file types.
Summary
I use this more than any other video editing freeware. Worth the download for sure!
As expected speed depends on hardware.

very very slow program. takes 2 1/2 hrs. to convert 1 1/2 hrs. of video. if you've got hours to waste, it might be an ok program.

It revealed to be a 30-day trial program therefore it is not a freeware!! After that period, registration is required. Also after converting avi file to mpeg, no sound output was found, regardless different closen options... I wasted my time and had to proceed with uninstall...

Convert AVI files to MPEG-1 format.

TMPGEnc converts AVI files to MPEG-1, the format used in VideoCDs. Using a variety of options, you can compress your video file while retaining high quality. TMPGEnc enables you to adjust the bit rate, the "quantize matrix", the GOP structure, the interlace, and many other parameters so you can create the most appropriate movie file for your purposes.

Note that a 30-day trial with MPEG-2 encoding is included. After 30 days, MPEG-2 encoding will be disabled, but MPEG-1 encoding will still be available.
