Publisher's description of TMPGEnc
From TMPG:
TMPGEnc converts AVI files to MPEG-1, the format used in VideoCDs. Using a variety of options, you can compress your video file while retaining high quality. TMPGEnc enables you to adjust the bit rate, the "quantize matrix", the GOP structure, the interlace, and many other parameters so you can create the most appropriate movie file for your purposes.
Note that a 30-day trial with MPEG-2 encoding is included. After 30 days, MPEG-2 encoding will be disabled, but MPEG-1 encoding will still be available.

Editor's review of TMPGEnc
Though this oddly named video converter is much more narrowly focused than many in its class, it's easy to use, functional, and free. TMPGEnc's gray interface will never win any design accolades, but since it works entirely in step-by-step mode, we doubt most users will get confused. Basically, the program converts AVI files into various flavors of MPEG optimized for DVD, VideoCD, and Super VideoCD. For a freebie, this one gives you a surprisingly large amount of control over your new file. For instance, you can convert in interlaced or noninterlaced modes; change the aspect ratio and size; apply noise reduction; crop edges; and extract certain portions of a clip. TMPGEnc also lets you set the video quality and apply different filters. As long as you don't regularly need to encode video files in a codec other than MPEG, you'll find this one to be well worth considering.

Read the manual all those who trash this

Pros: The standard in converting file formats in my opinion. Okay so I have the plus version that allows you so much more such as Mov and RM conversion - but the freeware version is as good handling everything else - including WMV. I will agree that the interface is overhelming to newcomers, but read the tutorials and the Wizard at the start is a great help. Don't display a preview, this makes the conversion so much faster. The program will also be able to match up off setted audio and video and allow you to use a seperate wav file as audio in making a file...too much to mention. Though all you need to do is look at sites like Videohelp.com ect and you'll understand just how powerful and popular this program truely is.
Cons: Nothing once you know what your doing. I mean what else can convert RM, MOV, WMV, AVI, MPEG without a hassel (ok in the plus version but soooooo worth it)

Great Encoder for advanced Users!

Pros: This program of all encoders puts out the greatest quality. It also includes the most options. I often hear it referred to as the "FireFox" of encoders.
Cons: Not good for beginners. Very complex options. If you dont know what your doing you could end up making several neat looking coasters for your coffee table. This program is also the slowest of all encoders. Typical times on a 2ghz computer for 90mins @ medium 1pass quality is 2 hours.

Pros: This is a great product. It is free, the mpeg2 encoder is the 30 day trail. Lots of options to fit to your needs, and can put audio and video together. Has everything you want and it's for free. What more could you want?
Cons: The converting gose slowly, but that is the same with all video converters. That's just the way it is. Still good, still free. :)
