From Glenn Alcott: Super Text Search allows you to search anything from a single file to an entire drive for any string of text. Both plain text and binary files can be searched, as can ZIP archives. The program also enables you to use regular expressions to perform more advanced searches, including wildcards and various types of pattern matching. After performing a search, you can view, edit, or open files containing the search text. Search results can be printed or exported.

This multifunctional utility quickly completes plain text and regular expression searches, but misidentified some search hits in our tests. Super Text Search has a utilitarian and easy-to-understand interface. The program quickly finds and displays search matches in a directory.

Users with an understanding of regular expressions can use that technique for powerful searches. Super Text Search can search multiple file types though in our tests it misidentified searches in some OpenOffice documents. The application offers search-enhancement options such as case-sensitivity, matching whole words, and compressed files lookup. All users need help finding lost documents.

This 15-day demo program is not as powerful as some similar search utilities, but it is quick. Novice users particularly will find it a simple program that delivers most, if not all, files matching the search criteria.

  Handy Utility

  Pros: I am a Visual Basic programmer. One weakness of the Windows search utility is that it will not search through files associated with programming code. So if I want to find out if I have called the same stored procedure in more than one file, I am out of luck. Super Text Search is easy to use and will search through files ignored by the Windows Search utility.

  Cons: One disappointment for me is that the file export feature does not include the full path of the file. I had hoped to use this program to created a database of all the SQL Server views and stored procedures used in all the code on the server, but the export feature truncates the path making it unsuitable for that purpose. So, I intend to write my own utility with Visual Basic 2005. Fortunately, VB 2005 has file handling capabilities that should make this fairly simple.
