Publisher's description of MacZip

From Dirk Haase: MacZip is a free tool that includes both zip (for compression) and unzip (for extraction) capabilities. MacZip can compress files for the following systems: Unix, VMS, MS-DOS, OS/2, Windows NT, Minix, Atari, Macintosh, Amiga, and Acorn RISC OS. MacZip also can unzip its own zipped archives. MacZip works with archives produced by PKZip, and PKZip and PKUnzip can work with archives produced by MacZip. In addition, the program supports encryption for secure archive creation.

  Completely unecessary...

  Pros: ZIP is a tried and true compression scheme. Although it only works perfectly with text documents and bitmap image files due to the nature of it's compression algorithm.

  Cons: This software is completely pointless. The latest and greatest version of Mac OS creates .ZIP files natively. All you have to do is right-click (control click) the item, and tell your Mac to Archive the item(s). It will do the rest.

  Zipeg does it better

  Pros: I sort of agree with bmiller2456`s review. Mac OSX does create zips. But when you expand it by double clicking on it it gets completely unpacked - which is not always what I want. Sometimes I just need 1 picture out of thousand - I will know it when I see it. There is newer free software called Zipeg that does exactly this. Funny it does not even attempt to create ZIPs leaving this job to OS tools.

  Zipeg is like WinZip and WinRar but for both Macintosh and Windows. I like it better than StuffIt or MacZip.

  Unable to install; it required Mac Classic

  Pros: It seems great, lot of promise.

  Cons: I won't install programs that require Mac Classic. Can't you modify / upgrade it to work with Mac 10?

  Pointless software

  Pros: None.

  Cons: Stated to be free software to zip or unzip files. But only the software to unzip files is free, and we already have Stuffit Expander to do that. So its been a waste of time coming here.
