Publisher's description of Startup Inspector for Windows

From William Yang:

Startup Inspector for Windows helps manage your startup applications and provides information on programs that run when you start up Windows. It can tell whether a program is necessary to the system or if it is spyware. The application scans all programs in the Windows startup folder and registry, and provides you with background information. There are more than 4,300 programs in the database. The application's features also include the ability to remove harmful programs such as spyware, viruses, and dialers, as well as remove unnecessary programs like reminders and monitors, thus improving your system's performance and health. Version 2.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

True to its name, this application provides information on programs that automatically launch when you boot up Windows. The rather polished interface is logically organized, though we would have liked to see integrated help files. As it is, we had to consult the text document that came along with the download to learn what certain icons actually did. Startup Inspector for Windows lists all programs that launch upon system startup in a treelike structure and provides information such as memory usage, file location, and comments. The app's most helpful feature is the system by which it ranks entries. It not only tells you which programs are required by the system, but also which ones are unnecessary. If the app detects malicious programs such as spyware, it will let you disable the program, but doesn't provide any tools for removal. Though the utility can disable programs that run on startup, it strangely enough won't let you add new ones. In our tests, we didn't find Startup Inspector for Windows' database of known applications very comprehensive, since it failed to detect several fairly common utilities we had installed. Since it is completely free, we can still recommend this piece of software to users who need this functionality, especially inexperienced folks.
