Publisher's description of StartUp Organizer

From MetaProducts: Startup Organizer provides quick access to all of the programs that are automatically started when you turn on your computer. It lets you inspect, edit, and temporary disable such programs, and make backup configurations. You may significantly reduce the time required for your system start-up, disabling programs you don't need all the time. The Controlled start-up feature allows you to skip certain programs from start-up. Version 2.8 SR2 added support for %systemroot% and %windir% variables, added Vista-compatible Help file (HTML Help).

  Crap..

  Pros: I don't find anything useful to increase the startup speed.

  Cons: I downloaded this, based on the number of downlads. After I download and install, it screwed up my mouse touchpad. APointer.exe driver which is for Touchpad is in the start up list earlier, got disabled after APointer.exe.

  When this tool disabled that.. it should have the option to enable it or re-run the start up process. After this software, APointer.exe never runs.

  This is total waste...

  StartUp Organizer

  great utility to tame startup processes

  Pros: Nicely executed, straightforward utility that gives you essential control over startup. To answer a previous reviewer's question, the reason I paid money for this is to allow me to control startup sequencing. Now instead of Explorer, NIS, Outlook, Google Desktop, my three backup clients, a handful of miscellaneous processes, and all the services and MS procs thrashing every time I start my box I can pace them and let everyone have their space. This drastically cuts the time between reboot and when I can do useful work, and all my stuff still comes up automatically--without my even noticing it.

  I also like the alerts it gives when programs add themselves to your startup list. I really like knowing when this happens, and since I uninstalled SpySweeper (too much overhead) I missed this. SUO polls instead of notifying you immediately like SS, but that's fine for my needs. In fact I like it better, since I can set its poll interval to 10 minutes and not have to be bothered by ephemeral items like installation cleanups.

  Yes, I'm sure there are more features that could be added, but as it stands it does exactly what I want. I've tried a couple of competitive products and they were far inferior in terms of quality and function. These guys have turned out a very useful, robust, well-thought-out product, and as a fellow developer I know how difficult that is--well worth $25 a pop.
