Version: Stars demo
"Windows Enabler extends demo, great game! Played it when I was a kid."
Pros: Sadly, this game is no longer sold anywhere, you can sometimes find a copy on eBay, but the company doesn't sell it and hasn't made it freeware/abandonware. To get past a few (but not all) of the limitations of the demo, use Windows Enabler (Google for it... entirely worth it).
This game is the predecessor to games like Space Empires (the most recent edition of which is Space Empires 5 I believe). This is the original, guys!
Cons: Interface is a little cumbersome compared to modern games. Well, modern games are about 15 years newer than this one, so that isn't a surprise! Graphics are highly tactical, not meant to look pretty. That's why this is purely a strategy game.

"This turn-based strat game is simply the best!"
Pros: Even though this game was released in 1995(?) it still holds up even today! It has very low system requirements, but still manages to entertain for hours (and days) on end. Up to 20 people can play at the same time! You just email your turn to the host and they email you the new turn when it is generated. Space conquest at it's finest!
Cons: Poor Empire Interactive is now OOB. It's so sad. It can be a very tough to find the patches for this game. Most of the old websites are now defunct, so information and hosting sites are nearly a thing of the past. The demo version is limited to tech 10, but getting a full registered version gets rid of this limit.
