SolSuite Solitaire 2008
World-Class In Some Areas, Surprisingly Mediocre In Others
Pros: Enormous selection of solitaire games (more than you may ever find time to play). Best-of-breed collection of beautifully rendered card sets and backs, each with 7 size adjustments to delight the eyes at every screen resolution. Generous selection of attractive backgrounds. Excellent game support with rules help, legal moves display and even demos. Card counter. Extensive game statistics. Multi-player mode. Nice looking selection of avatars which, although very limited, can be expanded by adding your own. I'd rate Solitaire 2008 a 5+ based on these features. So why only 3 stars? Read on...
Cons: Sounds take you back to the Win95 days---literally and figuratively. Win a game and hear the lame Win95 "tada.wav". To make matters worse, there's no way to customize sounds other than to enable or disable them (sounds appear to be hard-coded in the executable). Games don't automatically pause when SolSuite window loses focus. Accessing any menu or toolbar--for example to change card size or check the rules--automatically unpauses a paused game. Instead of notifying "no more moves" when a game is over, Solitaire 2008 just sits there waiting for you to figure it out. Tip: hitting 'M' at this point will display "No more moves", so it would be nice and obviously easy for SolSuite to do this automatically. A few less important annoyances: Win95-era winning animations and pointless list of fake names/scores in the high scores dialog. Most of these cons should be easy to fix, so it's disappointing to see so many new versions come and go with no improvement in these areas.
