Editor's review of SoftAtlas Download Accelerator (SDA)

4 star editors rating

This accelerator is simple to use, improves download speed, and offers an extra or two, but it suffers slightly from a couple of peculiarities.

SoftAtlas Download Accelerator (SDA) opens like a spreadsheet/flight simulator hybrid--with columns, buttons, gauges, and a file tree. If you're not overwhelmed by the interface, spend a few minutes with SDA and everything comes together. To download a file, simply click a button and enter the URL. Of course, you can get more complicated by adding tags to identify the type of download, marking the file to download to a specific directory by file type, or forcing SDA to use a proxy. Oddly, what you can't do is easily edit an incorrect URL; you must delete and start over. SDA has these little irritants elsewhere.

It offers an RSS or Atom feed reader. That's unusual for this type of application, but it makes perfect sense, as feeds are simply scheduled downloads. However, though SDA doesn't schedule feed downloads, you can update all feeds with a single click. Also, SDA's simple feed-reader only opens Internet Explorer to finish summary entries. If its download speed and the odd extra or two fit your needs, you'll get used to this application's quirks.
