Editor's review of SocksChain
Aimed both at hiding a surfer's tracks online, and at using Internet applications blocked by a firewall, SocksChain is useful but occasionally unstable.
The program functions by connecting to a series of SOCKS servers, or proxy servers, which mask a surfer's original Internet address. Unlike some other similar programs, it can retrieve a list of available servers from the developer's site, check them for availability, and periodically switch which proxies it is using. It also offers a simple way to ensure that Internet applications such as Web browsers or instant messenger tools will work with these proxy servers, without needing any manual connection tweaking.
However, we found that establishing a full chain of proxy servers--the safest way to surf--was difficult even with this tool. Once online, we found the connection to be a bit unstable, with occasional problems sending e-mail or connecting to a site. However, these performance issues may not dissuade surfers who are seeking a real approximation of anonymity online.
