Publisher's description of Folder Lock 5.9.2
From New Softwares:Folder Lock is fast file-security software that can password-protect, lock, hide, and encrypt any number of files, folders, drives, pictures, and documents in seconds. Locked files are undeletable, unrenamable, unmovable, hidden, and inaccessible. You can lock, scramble, or encrypt depending on speed and security. Folder Lock is fully portable, so you can protect your files on USB flash drives, disks, CD-RWs, notebooks, and hard disks, and it doesn't require installation on another PC. Folder Lock protects files in Windows, DOS, and Safe modes, even when you change your OS or boot from a disk. Folder Lock doesn't let you delete its own program folder, and it can't be uninstalled without the correct password. Additional options include Stealth Mode, Hacker Attempt Monitoring, Shred files, AutoLock, Auto Shutdown PC, Lock your PC, Erase PC tracks, 256-bit Blowfish Encryption and Context Menu in Explorer.
Version 5.9.2 is a bug fixing release.

- "Lock down your secret documents"
Snoopers can't find or access the files you hide using Folder Lock, even in DOS or under other operating systems. This application provides two levels of protection: you can merely lock files and folders, or you can encrypt them using the 256-bit Blowfish algorithm. When you boot up the program, it'll ask you for a master password. Hitting the Browse link locates and lock folders anywhere on your computer, or you can simply secure them via the context menu. Encryption is limited in the free version to 25 MB.
Although the too-cute-for-words interface doesn't make them easy to find, Folder Lock does have a treasure trove of Advanced features, accessible after you hit the Options button. You can set files to be shredded, force the computer to shut down after failed entry attempts, erase document history, the clipboard and more, and enter into Stealth mode, which hides the app's presence on your computer.
The interface, which includes simple animations for no reason other than to "entertain" you, would be better served by a more standard layout that makes options readily and easily available. No doubt to excite your inner lock-breaking child, the octagonal purplish blue layout is supplemented with three more skins when you purchase the full version.
In our tests, the program demonstrated good speed, even when securing large folders. If you share a PC and need to keep certain files to yourself, you should definitely give Folder Lock a try.

"FOLDER LOCK 5.92 IS FRAUDULANT AND A JOKE UNDER WINDOWS VISTA"
Pros: The interface is cute, bordering on the childish
Cons: Installed this application on a USB drive, stored a few files in its Locker before closing the application. Under Windows, Folder optipons/Unhide protected operationg system files: Hide protected files was unchecked. All files stored in Folder Lock then became visible and intact, regardless of how they had been stored in Folder Lock's Locker: none were hidden, none were scrambled and none were encrypted.
Under Windows Vista SP1 this application is fraudulant and a bad joke. The developper claims it works with Vista. That's a bald face lie.

Version: Folder Lock 5.9.2
Cons: I purchased this application and installed it on my computer. The files were secured with a password. BUT. then, the application did not work properly anymore.
Despite the password and later on the licensecode the files can not be unlocked anymore. I can not get access to my files anymore!!
I tried to get support from Newsoftware Inc. by calling and emailing many times a day...NO RESPONSE...
Currently I am in big trouble as my files can not be accessed.
On a other PC I installed the application and there I could access the files despite that they were locked. e.g. shortcuts are accessible and via this way you can move the files to anothe place....what do you mean with secure?

Version: Folder Lock 5.9.2
"FRUDAULANT PROGRAM, ignore CNET EDITORS review."
Cons: The program claims portability. But I was able to easily open files from my USB drive on another computer (with folder lock installed on that drive as per instructions) Their customer services rep tells me to wait for a "BUG" fix patched for version 6.0 in December 2008. Another service rep says Folder Lock doesn't support my configuation (Apple G4). But it also doesn't work for Windows as other people here in this forum will tell you.
Question to CNET: Do you actually test these programs before you recommend it?
