Family Tree Builder
Contains more features than I would expect from freeware.

Pros: This is incredibly powerful software which continues to amaze me with its functionality (I've been using it for about three months now). What I especially like (but didn't discover for a month or two after I started with it) is that you can "associate" jpg or pdf files (containing census data, birth certificates, etc.) with anyone in your family tree. You just "add the record," select "associate," and then start double-clicking to your heart's delight on records in your tree which you want to associate with the document. It's a real lifesaver for answering those questions like, "Do I really have a record proving that Uncle John was married five times?" You just click on Uncle John and browse through the records associated with him.
Cons: As far as I can tell, importing GEDCOM data just creates a new database. There's no way to merge it with an existing family tree. Also, you must change a setting in the "preferences - options" portion of the program if you want to change where the data is stored. Finally, it comes with free storage to the web of up to 1,000 records so, at that point, I'm probably going to need to pay, but, heck, with that much time invested in the project, off-site storage is probably a worthwhile investment.

Family Tree Builder
Not bad, needs updating

Pros: Easy to use, does the job quickly and generates a good looking tree. I used the file as input to another program.
Cons: Printing out the family tree is only a screenshot print. If your tree is wider than the screen, tough luck. Cannot handle spaced names such as Mary Sue.

Family Tree Builder
Very easy to use and many nice features
by: meisje25

Pros: easy to use
nice reports and summaries
filling in this family tree makes addictive
Cons: there are some minor things that I miss, e.g. highlighting a name (e.g. Maria Anna Smith - if the person was called Anna), printing the whole tree (but I have to admit that that would use up 80 pages of paper), geneaology report is only in English

Family Tree Builder
Poor keyboard support for Belgium
by: aplfan
on 30-Dec-2007 01:55:16 AM
Pros: In Belgium we have 3 official langages: Nederlands (Dutch) Français (French) and Deutsch (German)
BUT on computers we have also DIFFERENT KEYBOARDS.
We use AZERTY for French AND Dutch, so we need that keybordconfiguration.
We never use QWERTY or the German QWERTZU
Cons: As a Belgian Flamish spaeking (=Nederlands=Dutch) I need an AZERTY layout for the keyboard. I do not find that in your programsupport.
In my famillytree I NEED both languages:
Flamish=Vlaams=Dutch for the northpar of Belgium BUT on a AZERTY layout not a QWERTY layout and
Français=Frans=French for the soudpart of Belgium ALSO in AZERTY layout.
Luckily I have no rout in the German speaking part so I do not need QWERTZU but if I want to support Luxemburg, they use 3 languages also: Letzbürgs (likes German but is not it) written in German, Deutch=German (QWERTZU) and French (AZERTY)
Genealogical greetings, Guido
