SiSoftware Sandra Lite is a 32 and 64-bit Windows system analyzer that includes benchmarking, testing, and listing modules. It tries to go beyond other utilities to show you more of what is really going on under the hood so you draw comparisons at both a high and low-level in a single product. You can get information about the CPU, chipset, video adapter, ports, printers, sound card, memory, network, Windows internals, AGP, ODBC Connections, and USB2.

Adds support for newly released hardware devices (CPUs, chipsets, hardware monitor chips, phones, and PDAs). Version XI.SP1a has official support for Vista RTM. Updated hardware support.

Sandra Lite is a beautifully constructed testing, benchmarking, and tweaking tool, but a promised help function fails. Sandra Lite's interface logically arranges dozens of system tests over seven tabbed screens. There isn't space to cover all the well-executed tests this software performs. The primary screen indexes the tool types in broad categories: hardware, software, testing, tools, and benchmarks. Each category includes as many as a dozen tests or benchmarks to divine the nature of your system. This demoware disables some tests for unregistered users, but there are more than enough to decide if Sandra Lite works for you. Testing your CPU, hard drives, memory, or motherboard takes less time than you'd expect. The same is true when testing software variables, processes, modules, fonts, and a baker's dozen of other tests. Especially handy are the tips and warnings displayed after each test. Unfortunately, double-clicking a warning or tip doesn't pull up the promised additional help information. However, you can quickly copy and paste results to your clipboard, or have the program compile a report. Intermediate to advanced users will quickly warm to this flexible and informative program.

"If you help friends fix their PCs, this will give you a snapshot"

Pros: Gives you a snapshot of the machine faster than opening up the case, and can spot and help diagnose problems (hot spots, potential bios conflicts,...) very quickly. It won't do everything, but it's free, fast, and I've never found it to be wrong

Cons: You need to have a moderate to high knowledge of what you are looking at. This is not a utility that's going to help the truly casual computer user (though it might give you pointers on what to research and learn about)
