Publisher's description of SMPlayer 0.5.2
From rvm:SMPlayer is a new multimedia player. It uses the award-winning MPlayer as engine, so it's able to play the most known video & audio formats without the need of external codecs: avi, mkv, ogm, mpeg, vob, 3gp, asf, mov, wmv, mp3, ogg. You can also play DVD discs and Internet streams. Special care have been taken with subtitles. It supports srt, sub, ssa, embedded subtitles in Matroska files, DVD subtitles. SMPlayer subtitles can be very nice, you can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles. One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave. don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume.
Version 0.5.2 has shortcut editor been added. The GUI has been rewritten, adding some toolbars, and now icons can also be changed; several icon themes are available. This release can show an icon in the system tray. Some new functions have been added like pan and scan, stay on top, and the ability to set the size of the window. Several new translations have been added: this release is translated into more than 20 languages.

- "From karaoke to DVDs to streaming audio"
On the video-player spectrum, SMPlayer is somewhere between the full-bodied Miro and the super-lightweight VLC Player. The freeware player, intended to be a front-end for MPlayer, supports an impressive list of features and options.
The list of supported formats encompasses both major audio and video codecs and does a good job of trying to differentiate itself from the competition. One of the best features is that the player will remember your settings per video, so if you quit the app in the middle of playing, it'll restart it with the exact same settings as before. Subtitles are fully customizable, including color, font, and size, and it can stream in content from the Internet. The app also works on both Windows and Linux, and it's supported in more than 20 languages. There's also a karaoke filter, so you can remove the audio track.
As you might expect, the install file is quite large at 17MB, and it takes up a fair bit of RAM. We experienced no stability issues with the program, so we're quite comfortable in recommending it as a strong secondary player or even a primary, if one of its more esoteric features is just what you need.

Version: SMPlayer 0.5.2
"Finally one that really does play everything!"
Pros: I have lots of video, in different video format, Window's media player and VLC player play some but I downloaded this to see If It would work on the videos the others could not play and guess what? It worked! I am very happy I came across this download. If u have video files that wont play, then download this, IT WORKS!
Cons: Kinda of a memory hog, but hell it works

Version: SMPlayer 0.5.2
Pros: It's greatest feature is the "settings saved per file" feature - its saves AR, pan and scan, even volume levels (optional) for each individual file you view/listen to. It does this automatically as you select options for each file. In short, a superb time-saving (and apparently original) idea. It looks great too. Very easy to use with a few minor exceptions...
Cons: This is a very new project so unfair to judge it too harshly. Having said that there isn't too much wrong with it. The only things that irked me was the lack of 100% FLV support, tho obviously that's an mplayer problem. If only the author could extend the prog into some sort of mplayer/directshow hybrid to compensate for this.
Oh, and the rather non-standard "send to tray" option drives me nuts - tho ill admit its more logical to click the tray icon to send the app to the tray, I can't get used to the exit button being used to send the app to the tray AND turn off whatever's playing. This irritates me greatly (I'd rather keep it as an exit button than have it do that).
But I'm nitpicking. Install this thing and see for yerself. It's great!

Version: SMPlayer 0.5.2
Pros: I was searching for a player that would open DAT file format and other obscure video formats) , VLC only other found. I didn't even open the file though player, just drag n dropped and it played immediatly, not even buffering time or anything. Looks very professional. I can tell right away this will be easy to use and lots of features. Even will play a rental DVD!!! (I like to watch movies on my computer without saving/ripping)
Cons: before and after playing the test file (DAT), flickering lime green colour on screen, part of my odd file or the program I don't know yet. Not serious problem. The ability to play strange file formats is the reason to choose this so if only it would convert them to a common file type, it would be perfect. I would even pay money for this kind of service.
