• poor recovery, included unwanted Google Chrome install

  -Recuva installer installed Google Chrome without asking, without warning, and with no way to decline. The Chrome install happened before I even knew it was happening. This was a most unwelcome surprise. I am always careful to use the most advanced and customizable installation options so I can minimize unwanted extras, but there was no mention that Chrome was coming until it was too late. This is downright unscrupulous behavior by the publisher. -Took many hours to scan a 2TB exFAT drive. -Could only recover a tiny fraction of the files on the drive.

  I needed to recover a file I'd deleted for good by mistake. I was delighted to find free file recovery software - more often than not you get a trial version that identifies the lost files but won't recover them unless you pay. The scan was pleasingly fast but I got a message that it was unable to find ANY files. I'd emptied the recycle bin only an hour previously so my lost file can't have been that badly damaged. Installation process installed software didn't want (Google Chrome, Google Toolbar and CCleaner.) Yes, there was an opt-out but as so often it was not easy to spot. Smart Screen Filter blocked the download. I was so desperate to retrieve the file that I ignored the warning - taking the risk for nothing. Fortunately no harm done. Many of us have had that "oh no" moment when we realise we've deleted something important, and will try anything to get it back. This software is a waste of time (for me, anyway) and I'd look elsewhere. Fortunately I managed to get another copy of the file from its original source!

  Summary

  I have accidentally deleted video files on camera's SD card. One of the deleted mp4 file size is over 2G. I have tried PhotoRec and iCare data recovery. But, none of them is able to recover the deleted video files correctly. Recuva recovers all my video with original resolution, no hassles.

  Recuva was 1 of 2 photo recovery programs I decided to try after reading reviews here. I downloaded Recuva but not the second program (Mini Tool Photo Recovery) because I didn't need it. Recuva retrieved all 886 files I had on a Transcend SDHC 16GB memory card. However, 7 of the files were "partially" recovered. I'd recommend potential users read through its online manual and other documents first before using the program; if I had, I'd have saved myself quite a bit of time. The memory card, when in my camera, showed some photos with no problem, but many others as "can't playback image." I couldn't download even the good photos to my laptop; the process would essentially freeze. That meant I'd lost the entire card's contents. With Recuva, I used its wizard and selected options that I wanted, such as "pictures" as the file type I wanted to retrieve. I tried to get the program to search in the camera that was plugged into the laptop via USB, but it didn't recognize that option. So, I had to select file location as "on my media card or iPod." I wanted to retrieve files that had not been deleted as well as files that had been deleted. So, after selecting the options I wanted, a window came up. I then had to go to the Advanced program, click on Options and sort through the tabs on the window that opened. On the Actions tab, I clicked on "scan for non-deleted files." The program took 7 minutes to partially/completely recover all the files. It worked well and is free.

  I tried running this program but the hard drive was unresponsive so I canceled the scan. Then I checked another drive in my computer and noticed that some folders now had nothing on them (this was a different hard drive then the one I tried to check). So I rebooted my computer and it had the windows logo and then went to a black screen. After several attempts at booting in safe mode to figure out the problem I did a system restore. It still wouldn't boot in normal mode so I tried safe mode and a system restore again. I finally have my computer back but I can't find this program on my system to remove it.

  This program does more damage than good.

  Fast. Choose what to scan and the folder recovered files will go to.

  Maybe a bit primitive looking but not really a con.

  Found everything quickly. Context menu so easy to choose where to scan. Can choose destination folder. Very easy to use.

  I cannot really find any. Some features is not free to use, but for basic usage the free version is enough.

  Pros

  I uninstalled HP Smart Web printing and it deleted all my settings, documents, most of my music files, downloads, etc. Using Recuva and my backups I was able to restore almost all of my files. Just make sure you restore files as soon as possible because they will get overwritten as you use your computer. I had to do a system restore to get my system working again, and Windows overwrote a lot of the files in reconfiguring my system.

  None at all.

  This program can really be a life saver if something goes wrong.

  Pros

  I thought I was out of options, helped me resolve my issue of unrecoverable files fairly easily once I figured it out. Terrific result and a life saver.

  Cons

  I did have to look up a few guides to using it, but overall it is as straightforward as something like this could be.

  Only found and recovers a few photos out of hundreds. Support was useless. Started getting peppered with emails trying to sell me other apps. Get lost!
