  • "Mozilla's mini mobile browser"

As a mini Mozilla, Minimo enters the fray of mobile browsers, filling the Firefox-shaped hole made sharper by the presence of cell-phone-size competitors vying for mobile browsing authority--Pocket IE, Opera Mini, and Yahoo Go. We found that on our PDA, Minimo is a strong candidate with decent browsing speeds, a modest but useful palette of preferences, and a slight twist on the tabbed browsing interface. For one, the browsing toolbar resides on the bottom of the screen and includes mobile-specific buttons for showing and hiding the address bar, increasing text size, and panning around the screen. Instead of navigating away from the home page--a portal with Google search and links to popular pages optimized for mobile viewing--Minimo anchors it as the first tab by default.

Minimo's cool blue-and-green color scheme isn't as cheery as that of some competitors, and there's room for more features, like entering a URL through the control panel as well as the "@" button. Despite that, Mozilla's minibrowser debut is a respectable one, and its appeal to open source to XML and JavaScript tinkerers interested in customizing the app will win it staunch supporters.
