One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000 defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system. PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).

This freeware executable defrags your page file and registry hive, but runs only at startup. PageDefrag requires no installation and defaults to an easily comprehensible interface for scheduling and delay. The program effectively defrags your page or swap file to remove segments from your registry and keep your system running at high performance. It also converts multiple fragments in select registry hives to a single fragment.

Again, the opportunity for system speedup is this application's goal. However, you'll need to stop work in order to run PageDefrag. It runs only at startup and adds a bit of time to your boot process. The boost you receive in system performance depends on the fragmentation this utility finds.

With repeated usage, we found less drastic improvement. Nonetheless, any level user looking for a simple tool to improve system performance is going to like this application.

"Simple to use, even for a novice"

Pros: It takes one minute to set it up to run every time the computer boots up.

After the first time you run it subsequent defragmentations take only a couple of seconds each time your computer boots.
