  • "Get productivity for free"

An increasingly credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office users, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OpenOffice.org lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office, PDF, HTML, and XML. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications. We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

    "Excellent MS Office alternative!!"

    by computer_genius on December 9, 2005

Pros: It has a lot of features. It supports more extensions than MS Office, and is really compatible with it. An old MS Office user won't have problems with this. Support is extremely great! There are lots of forums open for this suite too. The suite is really complete.. what more could you ask for? It's free, it's open-source, it's ready to use, and it's excellent! The word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation tool is close to MS Office.. and has a slight possibility to be better. Try this now!!

Cons: Clearing records and adding extensions aren't really that easy.. you have to check instructions over and over again. MS Office is much more user-friendly.. but this will do great.

"Excellent freeware alternative to Microsoft Office, but MS Office is still bette"

by CableguyTK on January 22, 2006

    Pros: Its free.

It includes all the programs you would normally find with MS Office...Word, Excel, Access, etc.

I think there is a deeper level of customization with this over MS Office.

Cons: It might be free, but MS Office is still better. MS Office feels better and supports more stuff that people usually put into documents. Open Office has a long ways to go in my opinion.

    Pretty big download size.

    "Nice"

    by Justin1278 on October 25, 2005

Pros: This is a very good free program. It has some features that Microsoft Office does not. Best of all it is free. All of the software on my computer is either free or it came with it and it works fine. Better interface easier to use than the other versions.

Cons: A little more difficult to use than Microsoft Office. I wish it had a e-mail program but no big deal.

    "I'm convinced."

by HuDu on October 26, 2005

Pros: I'm a long-time MS Office user, and even I can't find much to fault in OpenOffice 2.0. The interface is improved over previous versions, a database app has been added, and its MS Office file filters are good enough for it to read and write Office documents with few or no problems. On top of that, it exports any file to PDF, and by default saves files in the OASIS OpenDocument Format that is also open-source and free from vendor patents.

OOo is just as configurable as MS Office, maybe even more so. Not only can the user pick and choose the applications to install, he can choose which file formats to save in, how much memory to allocate, etc. For lazier users (like me) the default installation works great with no user intervention.

I've got a legit copy of MS Office 2003 Pro, but I honestly can't justify the price difference anymore. OpenOffice does a lot, does it well, and does it for free.

Cons: OOo doesn't include a calendar/email client (like MS Office Outlook), but that's a minor quibble. (Mozilla Thunderbird and Sunbird will take care of that task, and they're free, too.)

"How much more can you ask for? The best."

by shengguan on November 18, 2005

Pros: Full featured office suite competing against Microsoft Office. Has everything that an average or even an advanced computer users would need. Why pay hundreds of dollars for Microsoft Office when you don't have to pay for anything. It includes a Word processor, Presentation software, excel and many more. Even includes exporting files to PDF for publishing it to the web. Many many more features not found in Microsoft Office. best of all, it's free.

Cons: It's a little bit slow on slow computers but i guess it's the amount of functions in the program that makes it slow but overall a high quality piece of software.
