Pros: I first played Navy Field when it was still in its beta stage and it was at best OK. As a game it has a fairly unique yet simple premise: buy a ship, go to battle, get points/money and then buy a better ship.

As you and your team-mates steam around the playing field, trying to blow the enemy out of the water, all action is viewed from a slightly skewed birds-eye angle.

The variety of potential ships to purchase is huge, and the customisation, e.g. guns, armour, etc., only adds to this.

Cons: The main flaw of the game is the waiting involved before each battle. This can often be 10-15 minutes. Then there is the inevitable arguing over "unbalanced" teams and what ships should go were. This goes on and on and usually decends into insults. An auto-balance function would seem to slove this instead of leaving it down to an individual.

Lag and bug issues (may be sorted in the release version - doubt it though)

Rude gamers

Lack of a comprehensive manual

Slightly repetitive

Personally I don't think it's worth forking out the cash every month. Then again, I point blank refuse to play ANY game that requires subscriptions. Some people loved this game! It's worth the download as the 30 levels you get with the trial will give you HOURS of gaming to help you decide.

...there are so many more things you could have said. Let me elaborate.

I played this game for six months in beta, and I wouldn't touch Navyfield with a bargepole as a paying customer. Lack of depth in the game, too many bugs, dated 2D sprite-based graphics, Nazi moderators, immature & unfriendly community, FAR too expensive for what it is. The game devs don't give a toss about the game. Seriously. They just banged it out full of holes to make the most money, and they're probably packing their bags for their holidays now.

Tommyboy71 says game crashes are becoming more rare. Let me tell you this is not the case; crashes happen fairly frequently and the lag is so bad as to make the game unplayable sometimes. This is because of the poorly-designed framework and the fact that the software is always relied upon to be in sync with the server.

The controls are far from easy. There are so many keys to remember that you may well end up incurring RSI. The user interface is extremely complex and badly-planned.

Oh, and be prepared to get absolutely walked all over by high-level players as there is no mercy for beginners. These sorts of players regard newbies as "food" by which merely to level up quicker.

SD Enternet, who market Navyfield, sold the retail launch on the back of vague promises and oft-quoted additions to the game. As of yet, the promised extra missions still have yet to appear. The only thing that the player has to look forward to is paying through the nose for every aspect of the game.

Want a subscription? It'll cost you. Want to boost your sailors' skills? Costs extra. Want to buy a slightly different model of ship with different attributes? Pay up. Want to buy...well, you get my drift.

If you have money and time to waste, and you like self-torture and being insulted by teenage, pimply moderators, buy Navyfield. If you belong to the sensible crowd, save your money for Battlestations: Midway.
