Publisher's description of Flyff

From Gala-Net:

Flyff, or Fly For Fun, is an online MMORPG. Flyff separates itself from most MMORPGs by having a flying system, in which you can fly around using a hoverboard or broom as a way of transportation to other islands and towns in the game to explore and level up or for battles in PVP (Player vs. Player) mode and more than 120 levels of play. Version 9 includes the new pet raising system that allows players to further enhance their performance.

Fly For Fun, or FlyFF, as it likes to be called, is an MMORPG that has an interesting incentive. Some MMORPGs prevent you from leveling up without spending real-world cash on their play-world's tchotchkes, but the catch with FlyFF is in the name. Although you'd think that there's a lot of flying involved, that's only if you get to level 20 and complete the Flying Quest.

Although it's fairly easy to skip out on the money scams that are ubiquitous in many MMORPGs, the game's many layer of speech bubbles in the crowded town areas can make it a bit difficult to separate the legit businesses from the scammers.

Other than that, there's a lot that FlyFF shares with other similar games. You play a character, either male or female, over whom you have limited amount of design control. Most the colorings and face-shapes in this game look a bit emo, and the monsters are probably a bit too cartoony and non-threatening in appearance.

The game play is fun, though a bit repetitive. You can power-up during a fight, so you can take on and beat much larger foes--though it does cost you food. There are many different job divisions that you can specialize in, too, forcing you to collect different armor and weapons, and perhaps giving FlyFF an extra dimension of play.

    "Worth the download"

by Havistus on April 18, 2008

Pros: It's free. Yes, there are optional items you can pay real cash for, as well as converting real money into play money... but unlike many other games that claim the free thing, you don't need these items to get any extra fun out of the game. In fact, since they allow personal shops, chances are that someone else bought the item you're looking for and is willing to trade it for game money.

I like the fact that you can successfully solo as long as you build your character right (except for a few mission requiring a party... not too many people do those missions anyway). There are a decent amount of jobs to choose from (after you get to level 15). Of course one of the funner aspects of the game is flying. You can fly and even take part in aerial combat (totally unneccessary and a tad awkward as well).

The game is updated regularly and the moderators (though seemingly invisible) are there. I highly recommend this game if you are tired of the drudgery of having 40 people spread all across the world try to coordinate a raid... or do anything for that matter...

An included bonus to this game is that the upper limit to a party (if you even use a party to begin with) is 8. Plus, if you REEEAAALLLY want to, you can become part of a guild. Also, outside of dueling, there is no PKing (although i do believe they have a server that supports it... enter at your own risk or preference)... which is a good thing- if you've ever tried playing a hardcore game of Diablo 2 I'm sure you understand what I mean.

Cons: Glitches. Not that many, but some channels have so many people setting up shop and walking away from the computer, or going to bed, that a tremendous amount of lag can be felt on any connection (including cable).

Speaking of lag. Lag happens out in the field as well. Depending on the server load it may just happen a whole lot. Nothing is more horrifying than kicking some one moment, and the next (after your comp catches up with the game) seeing you character dead. Dying after level 20 means you lose XP. You can level down as a result... which needless to say may take a long time to regain depending on which level you are and what job your character is.

If you're on dial-up count on playing about half an hour later (or more) after you dial up a connection. The reason being that depending on how server maintenance went on Wednesday you might have 50+ items that have to be installed first (not really a con I suppose, just an annoyance). I logged on briefly last night at 10:00... 11:45 I actually got to play.

Also, every once in a while there's a problem with a server. That means that unless you've made a character elsewhere you're pretty much screwed till the issue is resolved, which might take ten minutes, or it might take 2 weeks. I've heard certain stories about people using the premium shop only to have the objects they purchased never arrive in their account, but I'm not really going to list it as a con because it could simply be user error.

    "Decent."

by FanOfKOTOKO on April 30, 2008

Pros: At first, the game starts out to be very friendly offering some-what decent experience gain and seems to be oriented to 'solo' playing.

Offers a very nice storyline and 'cartoon-y' graphics with overall good gameplay.

Cons: The movement of characters seems somewhat rough compared to other games I've played, and the skills seems a bit poorly done in terms of graphics (you can see the targets sticking out of some of the skill graphics). As you level up, the game seems very group-oriented as opposed to the more 'traveling and exploring alone' feel the beginning implemented, as well as a sharp change in experience gain.
