VMware Fusion is a desktop application that lets you create and run virtual machines on your Intel-based Mac. You can also download virtual machines from the VMware Technology Network (VMTN) Website, which has a growing library of virtual appliances with a wide range of pre-installed and preconfigured applications and operating systems. Fusion supports all Intel Mac hardware, including the new 64-bit Mac Pro and iMac. Your virtual machines can have multiple virtual processors, taking advantage of the Intel Core Duo chips.

  VMware Fusion

  Nightmare with VMWare Fusion

  Pros: The software is good (not excellent because of the many bugs) and works adequately when it works. It does allow you to emulate a PC running Windows XP on a new MacBook.

  Cons: However, when it doesn't work you have BIG problems and just try getting support from VMWare. Just finding a phone number to call takes a lot of effort on the web then you discover for the Fusion product you can only get e-mail support at $24.99 per incident even though it's their bugs that caused your problems. I purchased the support because my problem was deadly but then their website malfunctioned and did not allow me to use the Product Key to open an incident support file. I was instructed to send an e-mail which the company promptly lost. Five phone calls later someone in Customer Service took pity on me (they're not supposed to talk with Fusion cuctomers) and opened an incident support file. I hope they solve my problem but I have yet to hear back from them.

  Here is the problem I experienced using Fusion on my new MacBook. 2,1 running Mac OSX 10.4.10 with Fusion 1.1.1.

  The arrangement worked fine for a few months but last week, suddenly, the computer began shutting down automatically.

  I shut the machine down out of Fusion and out of Mac OSX and restarted but this did not correct the problem

  Now, whenever I boot up, the machine will go through a perfect Windows boot, showing desktop icons (which are active and will respond when clicked) but every time after 30 to 45 seconds the machine will automatically shut down (using the usual Windows shut down routine).

  I have tried, but cannot enter safe mode during Windows boot up.

  The MacBook works perfectly in Mac mode.

  The most important thing is to recover the files lodged on the PC side of this Mac which include a 4 GB e-mail library and a 2 GB My Documents file as well as a Filemaker rolodex

  It is not obvious to me from the commands provided in Fusion how to do this from the Fusion envelope. Nor is it obvious how to find these files, except as an image, when browsing the hard drive on the Mac side.

  This Fusion failure mode is horrible because it appears files cannot be recovered once it happens.

  I love it!

  Pros: I love my MAC. but its cool to run windows every now and then on it. This fusion product is awesome!
