At its core, Logbook Pro is nothing more than a well-organized database. Like all databases, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Created specifically for pilots, most data-entry tools relate to the wild blue yonder. Available tables can store information such as types of planes, ratings, and pilot certificates. Once you get a good amount of data into the program, the software really shines. Countless reporting tools let you graph and analyze nearly any data set, from flight costs to average air times. Considering the importance of data entry, however, the software could use more shortcuts. Most fields are simply blank spaces; adding pull-down menus or pre-existing categories to pick from could speed up the entry process significantly. Regardless, if you're a PC-savvy pilot who's down with data entry, this database program is effortless to learn and provides a massive insight into every technical element of flight.

  Logbook Pro

  Flat files with some reporting, best for very techie people

  Pros: Well, a few good things. The thing is flexible. You can add custom fields almost as much as you want. You can also configure a lot of how the program runs.

  Cons: Unfortunately, it's not really good for pilots that aren't database experts. The feel of the product is that you have been dumped into a massive database and you have to be careful to hit the right button/icon/gadget to try to do what you want.

  Some aspects of the program seem not to be designed specifically for pilots. For example, pilot certificates are just held in a list with names that you can make up. No program savviness that a Commerical Pilot license is different from a Private Pilot license. The list of certificates you create is not linked in any way with the random list of ratings that you create. No recognition that ratings are tied to certificates at all. Did pilots even help right this program? If I wanted to keep handwritten lists of things, I'd do it on paper.

  Beyond the confusing user interface, there were quirks that just bothered me. For $120, I would expect the thing to understand how pilot medical certificates worked. In the demo, they show how you should manually go in and change your handtyped entry of your First Class medical exam and edit the expiration date yourself when after six months it still allows Commercial Pilot privileges. By hand? Are you kidding me?

  Clearly, some database expert spent some time tweaking a big, flat database so that it would generate some reports, but the usability of the thing isn't what a normal pilot would expect.
