LockTheFile encrypts files with a strong encryption algorithm. You may protect any information--text files, pictures, video and audio files--from other eyes and ears, and you can protect as many files as you need. The core functions of this program are a strong encryption algorithm, a handy user interface, the ability to send locked files to your friends by e-mail, the ability to unlock received files, the ability to lock and unlock files on the fly, the ability to store an administrative password in a secure place, and the ability to scan hard disk drives for locked files.

This simple encryption utility suffices for basic security tasks, but we don't recommend it for use with highly sensitive information. LockTheFile's straight-ahead interface won't confuse anyone, as it displays clearly labeled icons for securing documents, decrypting files, and configuring the application's very few settings. In our tests, we thought the program seemed to take a bit too long to encrypt the trial version's maximum number of 30 files, and it also seemed to slow our PC's performance considerably. All encrypted files are protected by a master password, but the app doesn't specify which algorithms it uses, so we can't vouch for how much security it actually offers. We also were disappointed to learn that LockTheFile can't create self-decrypting packs, so your recipient also will need to install the program. Though the program presents an easy-to-use option for simple encryption jobs, those who want a foolproof solution should look elsewhere.
