Programs in Mac OS X are creating lots of files and folders during their installation (like user preferences, temporary files, log-files). If you are going to delete a program from within the Finder, all these data will remain on your hard drive, and wastes precious space. So far, CleanApp has found associated files and folders by an identifier-key, and offered them for deletion. Indeed, corresponding files could not be found without this identifier-key. Version 3.0 beta 1 is considerably more efficient than previous versions taking up less memory and running even faster. This version is compatible with Leopard and has undergone a complete UI overhall.

Some sort of application-removal utility is a must for any Mac user who installs--and, inevitably, needs to delete--lots of trial applications. CleanApp is a very promising option, offering a lot of functionality for a relatively modest price tag. CleanApp gives you much of the functionality of other drag-drop-and-delete utilities (such as AppCleaner and AppZapper), but its unique logging tool promises to do a better job of removing hard-to-find support files by monitoring and analyzing applications and the files they access--and this is especially useful for removing browsers and other applications that link to large numbers of files. CleanApp also keeps track of old, seldom-used files and apps (often great candidates for the Trash), helps you protect files you don't ever want deleted, and even makes it easy to delete unnecessary and space-hogging language support packages (like do you really need Afrikaans, Kazakh, and Southern Sotho?). Unfortunately, CleanApp seems to be in a semi-permanent "public beta" (with a stable release promised back in March 2008)--although the "beta" isn't free, so users receive only a small discount for a work-in-progress application that still displays questionable stability. We look forward to updating this review when CleanApp emerges from its pseudo-beta.

  "AppZapper is just as good"

  Pros: I guess its just a great app like hazel, appzapper and so forth...

  Cons: it has a lot of competition from other programs
