Publisher's description of JHDC (Johns Hopkins Distributed Computing) Screensaver
From JHDC:JHDC allows you to put your computer to good use when you are not using it. It works exactly as your current screensaver, except that when it is running, your computer is simulating a brain, helping to solve such global problems as memory loss, schizophrenia, hyper-computational brain function, and the world-wide leading cause of death: neural diseases. JHDC harnesses the power of nearly unlimited PCs, all working together to solve one of the fundamental questions of humankind: how does the brain work. The main difference between SETI@home and JHDC, other than the problems they solve, is that with SETI@home, you only have a very small chance of doing something useful. However, with JHDC, you will definitely do something useful, as the work of every computer is equally important. JHDC only works when you are not working, so it is free and convenient. Why not install it and help make the world a better place for you and your children.

Version: JHDC (Johns Hopkins Distributed Computing) Screensaver 1.0
"Like to know what's going on"
Pros: I appreciate the lo-fi screensaver - it definitely doesn't tax my system resources any more than it needs to.
Cons: There's no way to know what the program is doing - I don't mean animations, but even a task name (or progress indicator) would be nice. Other programs allow much more control over resource allocation and operational modes.

Version: JHDC (Johns Hopkins Distributed Computing) Screensaver 1.0
Pros: The program does its two tasks without any great fuss. Without setting out to be fancy about it, it saves your screen from burn and it performs the neurological research as advertised.
Cons: If you're searching for something exciting to look at as a reward for your effortless contributions, go elsewhere. The most you're going to get is a simple text-like graphic with the JHDC logo and a report on how many hours and minutes your computer has contributed to the project, and even that much doesn't always show up.

Version: JHDC (Johns Hopkins Distributed Computing) Screensaver 1.0
Pros: simple, discreet
Cons: had to actually search for JHDC's homepage to find out that the only way to uninstall the screensaver is by downloading a seperate program.

"Its all for the greater good"
