Editor's review of Internet Radio Recorder

  • 5.0 stars

Though primarily designed to record streaming Internet radio, this feature-packed program boasts a number of other tools that will appeal to music fans. The well-designed, logically arranged interface lists all your options in the left pane. Internet Radio Recorder provides a large number of streaming audio stations in a variety of genres from hip-hop to classical, but you can use the built-in search tool to find even more. You will of course get a utility for scheduling recordings, and you'll also get a separate tool for capturing audio from a CD player, a microphone, or a line-in jack. Even if this application were limited to recording, we'd still be quite delighted, but its bonus features really make it shine. Internet Radio Recorder provides a conversion utility that can transform files among popular formats such as WAV, OGG, MP3, and WMA. The program also supplies a CD burner, a basic audio editor, and a polished media player that looks just like an old-school radio console. You even get a tool for designing your own CD labels and cases. This program definitely will please Internet radio fans, but everyone else is just as likely to be impressed.

    "If U can't Use this EZ program - U R THE PROBLEM!"

by johnnyincentx on October 19, 2005

Pros: I read all the other reviews and over and over I read people complaining about being confused or the program crashing, one from someone who said they have a 3.2Ghz Intel. I've read it requires a specific sound card, or that it crashes a lot.

    THIS IS ALL BOGUS.

The program is EZ EZ EZ to use. In fact if there are problems, perhaps people are expecting problems and creating ones themselves.

Unlike most Windows software most features and commands take 2-3 clicks, far less than say trying to do something on MS Word. Where even changing the font can take 10 clicks.

I love the feature that creates a folder in your "my music" default folder that comes with all Windows computers, and stores what you are listening to there, when you press the record button (an all in one click ;) Any tag info like song title, artist Etc.for what you record is also saved. Not only that but you have the option of inserting automatically a few seconds of silence between the cuts as it records. This makes burning later sweet and oh so easy.

By separating the songs for you, you can delete the crap and save the ones you like then mix and match and make your own CDs.

IF your forget to program this in, there is a basic visual sound editor that makes it easy to separate the songs from each other and then save them as you like. This will be a lot more work though, so learn how to set the program first and save yourself some time.

As far as the problems that have been mentioned. The problems people have mentioned are the best example I have ever seen of USER INABILITY TO READ or UNDERSTAND MANUAL. None of the problems mentioned are software issues.

here are some simple to set up but critical preferences/options that need to be properly aligned with your system. If you don't do this, you are asking for problems. This goes for ANY software. So I can't say this is a fault of this software.

Cons: First off, internet radio is NOT going to work well on Dial-Up. This is NOT the fault of the software. IF YOU WANT INTERNET RADIO GET BROADBAND.

Second, DROP OUTS ccur due to interruptions in the data streaming to your computer from the internet, they are NOT the fault of the software.

Third, As far as required computing power. I use a 1.6Ghz LAPTOP, and it works great.

Make sure this program has ample (512megs or more of RAM AND A BROADBAND CONNECTION. The more the better, always.

Fourth - There are dead stations listed on their list because Internet Stations come and go ALL THE TIME. For the best accuracy update the list regularly. Even then expect a good amount of listed stations to come up dead. Sometimes people, companies forget to "delist" themselves from the internet. Going Out of business does NOT automatically delete all references to a station online. In fact much contact info stays available for a long long time.

One thing they did stint on, and that's why I didn't give them 5 stars is no paper manual, not even a basic getting started one. Instead it comes with a CD PDF file. PDF/Adobe files take forever to open up, and are a hassle to read through vs. a vs. a paper manual. At the very least they should have included a simple starter manual.

I bet you anything the problems people have had stem from this, reading a PDF/Adobe file is a pain in the ass, and people probably just don't do it, then forget about it, and when it comes time to figure out the program mess up terribly.

Being cheap when it comes to manuals, is gonna cost this company sales. Too bad it's a good product.

"Let's be fare. The software does it's job."

by BtrGoneThanJail on February 18, 2006

Pros: I'm writing this review because I have to agree with "johnnyincentx" (previous reviewer) that this program IS easy to use and works well. Fortunately for me, I read the reviews before I installed the product. So I knew where to start and what to do. I've been a user of Total Recorder (High Criteria) for years and loved that program. However, one selling point for me on Internet Radio Recorder was that it breaks songs into indivual tracks and names them automatically according to the radio stations' information.

I'm thinking that most of the issues that have been posted here are due to firewall related issues. Mine wouldn't find any stations. I disabled my firewall, stations started playing. Set the program to "allowed" in my firewall. Re-enabled my firewall. Have been recording for almost 2 hours now. No issues.

To me, this is a simple program that does what it's name says it does. Along with that, they packed more features into it like CD/DVD burning, labeling, Audio Editing. No complaints here. As far as the manual being paperless, I actually prefer paperless manuals. The less paper, the better for me. So, I count that as a pro.

My system: Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB RAM. On my desktop, IRR is using 6 MB of RAM and the processor shoots to about 33% max sometimes. I'm typing this review in Firefox and Firefox is taking 101 MB of my RAM. I'm sure it will work on my 2.0GHZ Intel laptop as well. I can't see this program being an issue.

Let's be fare to the program and consider all the things that may have been missed on the user's end before destroying the author with bad reviews. I develop smaller apps than IRR, and even my apps take some thought and much time to develop.

I'm not sure how the support is of this company because I haven't needed to use it, but their site doesn't look as "helpful" as other developers sites.

Overall - 5 stars (and I'm just a joe user not affiliated with anybody)

Cons: The interface could be a "little" more intuitive.

"Nice idea, would be nicer if it worked! Def TRY before you BUY!!"

by AnonReview on February 20, 2006

Pros: 1. Easy to read layout.

    2. Intuitive.

    3. Nice concept.

Cons: 1. Program would NOT play any stations. I am an IT professional and couldn't get it to work. Tried disabling ALL firewalls, security programs, etc. with no luck. I would NOT expect an average user to be able to get it to work!

    2. Horrible website with NO online troubleshooting support. Website filled with many spelling and grammer errors.

    3. The program has a very poor help section; simply a poorly written PDF document. No table of contents and no troubleshooting section!

    4. Certainly not worth $29.99! Definatly try the demo version before you buy!

    "Maybe 2.5 stars"

by Steve The Wire Puller on April 3, 2005

Pros: (Note that Player/Recorders are different from other types of programs. You could use a regular media player and an audio capture program, but you can schedule to record a show unattended with this program. They don't require you to go to web site to play a station. I've tried Replay Radio, iRadio, but not AudioStreamer.)

Starts playing a station right away when it does connect. Has an audio editor, which might need to remove commercials on a talk station for instance, otherwise it seemed rip and id songs ok. You can update station list by genre. You can search for stations by categories (but it didn't always work). Has it's own Player (although you probably will prefer your own). Ability to burn CDs direct, which I didn't try. Fairly easy and uncluttered interface, the art deco touches might or might not please you. Fairly easy to setup.

Cons: A =lot= of stations didn't connect, which is close to a major flaw for only 2 stars. Sometimes skipped or disconnected. The playlist looked very interesting, but connect results were disappointing. Status doesn't seem to work, i.e. doesn't tell you if a station failed, unavailable or connected last time Database of stations could be better organized.
