Image Optimizer allows you to create the smallest possible JPEG, GIF, and PNG image files. You can save up to 50 percent in file size, which can considerably decrease Web page download times, reduce server load, reduce bandwidth charges, and save disk space. You can have complete control over GIFs and PNGs, by optimizing with regions. The application includes Digimarc watermarking, batch resize, and thumbnailing. A demo of the professional edition with image enhancement is included.

An excellent compression utility boosts what is otherwise an average image editor. Downloading the program installs both the regular version of Image Optimizer, as well as the pro variation. As far as we could tell, the major difference between the two is the pro version has a few extra editing tools, such as a color corrector and a focus enhancer. Both programs offer simple utilities for tweaking photos, including a cropper, a resizer, and a zoom tool. The programs' interface looks a bit chaotic at first glance, with tiny icons littering the left margin. Folks who have used other image-editing applications probably won't have any trouble figuring things out, though we could see how novices might be lost. However, it was Image Optimizer's compression tool that really impressed us. In our tests we transformed a 35K picture into an 8K file without any noticeable loss in quality. The app even automatically compares the two files for you, and the ability to shrink images in batch mode was a welcome perk. Although you can find more feature-packed image editors, this one will be useful to those concerned with saving space.

  Version: Image Optimizer 4.0

  "Works Great!"

  Pros: Easy to use, fast, and simple. Saving me SO much room in storage! Features to choose the level of compression and compress certain areas.

  Cons: The standard version doesn't have any photo editing tools beyond cropping (color, contrast, etc.), but the professional version does.

  "good product"

  Pros: Worked well for compressing a jpeg to host on a website

  Cons: Took some tweeking to compress to a decent level. Tried to compress a photo of 994k and originally it only compressed it to 946k which was not acceptable.

  "AWSOME!!! EASY TO USE!!!!!!!!!"

  Pros: So easy to use! File sizes not that big. It does anything and everything you would want an animation software to do.

  Cons: There is a help link, but it doesn't work. I couldn't find any help files on the web either. It only took me 30 seconds of hovering my mouse over icons to figure out how to do what I wasn't sure about.

  "Not that good"

  Pros: It's got ease of use, a few useful tools.

  Cons: The compression ratio is useless. It only knocks a small piece of the file size. If your looking for a download that halves the fize size, then keep looking.
