  • "A skillful and secure Web-surfing tool"

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.

    "Flawless"

    by pentium4forever on July 24, 2008

Pros: This browser is flawless in my opinion. Fast, and I like some of the new features in this version. The part where you can begin typing stuff into the address bar and it fetches your history, bookmarks, etc. Very handy.

"STILL THE BEST AND LOVING IT!!!!"

by mark bevan on July 17, 2008

Pros: I must admit whenever there's a new browser i do try them to give them the benefit of the doubt! (Opera, IE7 Pro, Safari etc etc) But my all time favourite is and will be for the foreseeable future Firefox 3 ( and is my default browser.)

Firefox is so light on your CPU and of course the main point being it renders the pages so fast! The blockyness of the past has long gone! Another great aspect is the consistency of speed with all the web sites i visit,Opera is lagging way behind in this area!

With this very latest update the bugs have been all but ironed out. Be patient and the remaining Add-on problems will too be resolved.

I don't have high speed internet but Firefox 3 makes it feel that way for sure!!

Cons: Nothing bad to say, just going from strength to strength!!

"Firefox 3.... the zenith in web browser development!"

by wyzardofodd on August 26, 2008

Pros: Since its inception several years back Firefox has been been my browser of choice. After putting this new version though its paces I have come to the conclusion that Firefox 3 is not only the best Mozilla product to date but the best web browser period. Where Firefox 2 had some shortcomings in terms of memory footprint, passing the Acid 2 test, and Java script performance, this new version passes all tests with flying colors. While the browser doesn't outwardly look much different from past versions, under the hood there are tons of new or redesigned features. The much ballyhooed "Awesome bar" has received much attention, but there is so much more that's new. The search engine, downloads, add-on, and password managers have all been redone. There are improvements to the tabbed browsing, support for site specific preferences, and better tab memory caching. Security is beefed up with malware tools that check visited sites with known malware sites, instant web site ID, and support for the Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer. Java script is an integral part of Firefox and now runs 3x faster than the previous version. Let's not forget about the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine and all the improvements it brings: passing the Acid 2 test, new and improved color management, better text and image manipulation, and improved PDF printing capabilities. One could go on and on listing the browser's new features. I find that one of Firefox's finest qualities is its stability, especially when it's loaded with lots of add-ons. At the present time my Firefox 3 has on it 77 extensions, 3 themes, 23 plug-ins, 163 search engines, and over 25,000 bookmarks, and I don't have any compatibility or stability issues whatsoever. My only gripe about the browser concerns its slow initial opening speed when loaded with lots of add-ons. Even with this slight delay it isn't anywhere near as bad as the time it took version 2 to load.

All in all Firefox 3 is one very fine browser! It is secure, fast page rendering, loaded with features, and can be customized to the nth degree. All others are sailing in its wake.
