Sometimes, simple is not just good, it's better. Ice RSS Reader is an open-source development project written in Java. It offers a basic reader interface: the familiar three-paned designed based on the typical e-mail client interface. There are no extra bells and whistles, nothing to make this app stand out from the crowd. But its simple, straightforward approach does hold appeal.

It comes preloaded with a variety of tech-oriented feeds, such as XML and Web Services Forum, Recent Java White Papers, EJB Design Forum, and others, so this reader may initially appeal to software developers. There also are a number of preloaded feeds in Chinese.

This free reader performed well in all our tests, responding quickly to all our clicks. Adding feeds was a simple process of simply pasting a URL into a field. Its lack of pizzazz or perhaps its generic look and feel will put off users who like some flair in their apps designs, but the vanilla character of Ice RSS Reader may actually make it appealing to many users tired of so many apps trying to be all things to all people. Sometimes, simple is not just good, it's better.
