Editor's review of HistoryKill
The Internet can be a sieve when it comes to privacy. Windows, Internet Explorer, Netscape, and AOL leave footprints all over your computer. HistoryKiller deletes your Web history, cookies, temporary Internet files, browser entries, and index.dat files with an automatically loading system-tray application immediately after you close your Web browser. The boss key hides browser and IM windows with one hot key. HistoryKill seems to have most bases covered, including the ability to block pop-up windows. However, unlike many of its competitors, it cannot erase tracks from various third-party programs, though it does shred files.
Although we couldn't clearly distinguish between the PopUp Killer and HistoryKill tray menu icons, we were able to easily move through the various menus of the user interface and set our preferences. It may take a couple days to become acquainted with the various hot keys, but they're worth the time. The most handy shortcut lets you override the pop-up-killer function (pressing the Control button while clicking a link) when you want to view one of the pop-ups and secondary browser windows that are blocked by default. This tool does a quick and efficient job of blocking pop-ups and deleting common computer tracks, but some other apps in the class are a bit more comprehensive.
