Publisher's description of HashOnClick

From 2BrightSparks: A simple Windows Explorer extension that tells you the MD5, SHA-1, or CRC32 hash value of a file. These hash values can be used to check if two or more files are exactly the same. The program is integrated with Windows Explorer so you just need to right-click on the files. A comprehensive help file is included, although the program is extremely easy to use. There are many reasons why you may wish to find out the hash value of a file. Many web sites for example list the MD5 value of a file, so that when you download it you can check to see if the file on your computer is correct. Some FTP servers also let you retrieve the MD5 value of a file (via the XMD5 FTP extension). CRC32 values are used in Zip files, and some FTP servers also let you retrieve the CRC32 value of a file (via the XCRC FTP extension). Another example of using HashOnClick is when you've copied a file from one location to another, and wish to confirm the files are identical.

This freeware application helps determine whether two files are identical by using hashing algorithms, but it doesn't clearly identify the comparison between files. HashOnClick is easily accessible via a simple right click on any file. This ultrasimple program utilizes MD5, SHA-1, and CRC32 algorithms, which are a set of calculations that creates hash values. These appear as a combination of random letters and numbers used to compare files. The program's context menu lets you choose a hashing algorithm to verify hash values of files. Generated values are displayed on a small window and can be easily saved to the clipboard or a text file. In our tests, the program quickly and flawlessly processed each and every file we threw its way, but keep in mind that it doesn't work with folders. It would be nice, though, if the program clearly told, perhaps through a pop-up notification, whether hash values matched or not. However, the help file does give a brief description of these algorithms. HashOnClick is a handy tool for software developers and cryptography enthusiasts of any level.

  Very helpful and easy to use

  Pros: Easy to use as it's intergrated in explorer. Gives a check that downloads have worked.

  Cons: If you have a need to get the hash of many files and store those values somewhere then HashOnClick would be a little time consuming.

  Easy to use and accurate.

  Pros: It integrates with explorer, so it's easy to use.

  Cons: Once you calculate the hash, you can't use the explorer window from which you launched it (even the desktop, if you launched it from there) until you close the display window. Oh and it would be nice if you could change the font. :)

  Absolutely perfect for checking downloaded files.

  Pros: The ease of use can't be beat. Use this to provide hash values for files you upload to your website or network. Check the hash value of files you download and compare it with the provided hash to make sure the file copied correctly.

  Cons: I'd like the program to create a text file with hash values for every file in a chosen folder. For doing multiple files, you must do one at a time and then copy and paste the values into a text file manually.

  Easy to use and VERY HELPFUL

  Pros: How to use it, this thing is easy as pie. All you do is right click a file and click which hash you want, you can even copy the hash to the clipboard right from the window it displays the hash in! This is my favorite feature, because what I do is when I organize files to my server folders, I paste the original and the server file's hash into Notepad. In this way, I am assured I am distributing the author's original work, and that is a nice feeling.

  Cons: I would love if it went one step further and created an entry in the Columns area, that way I could see the SHA-1 hash of files without right clicking them. This may be a resource issue, but I don't think it would be much of one, because the column could always be turned off when not used.
