Publisher's description of GIMPshop
From Scott Moschella:GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.
It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.
Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.

Editor's review of GIMPshop
GIMPshop is a remixed version of the open source, free GIMP image editor. Using plug-ins, it unifies the separate editing panes of the GIMP under one main window, so that the program functions similarly to every other standard app. It also renames most of GIMP's unique terminology with labels more familiar to Photoshop users. This has the great benefit of making many of Photoshop's tutorials applicable to this GIMP and Photoshop mashup.
Although the bogarting of Photoshop tutorials is cool, the BackgroundWindow plug-in isn't the most stable. Also, the current GIMPshop is built off of an older GIMP. The newer version loads faster, processes images faster, has a cleaner layout, refined tools, and comes with better preloaded plug-ins. Newer extensions either won't work well with GIMPshop, or they won't work at all.
GIMPshop strikes a hard bargain between the upgrade sacrifices and the Photoshopesque style, but for users who can accept that GIMP can do for free most but not all of what Photoshop can, we'd recommend giving GIMPshop a pass.
