From Frontbase: Create graphics with your favorite painting program, then convert them into icon files with this program. You also can convert icon files into different images. The program supports BMP, ICO, JPEG, PCX, PNG, TGA, and RAS formats. You can change the dimensions and the color depths of the images. You also can set pixels to be transparent, or, if the image has a color depth of 32bpp (Windows XP icon format), you can set an alpha value for each pixel. The program has its own menu in the mouse's right-button menu in Windows Explorer, where you can easily convert images from ICO, BMP, JPEG, PCX, PNG, RAS, and TGA to ICO, BMP, JPEG, PCX, PNG, RAS, and TGA.
Editor's review of Frontbase Image to Icon
The unsophisticated Frontbase Image to Icon lacks the kinds of features and usability that would make it first-rate. You can create nonanimated icons (including translucent ones for Windows XP), but the interface isn't convenient; you must manually design icons containing several images of different resolutions and color depths. The drop-down image list didn't impress us, either. Of the commands integrated into the Windows Context menu, JPEG conversion is the most useful. Frontbase Image to Icon's editing tools are conducive to experimentation, as you can always undo or revert. Without a tool to change local system icons, however, the program is unlikely to appeal to nondesigners, and most design professionals will probably want a more convenient tool. For that group in between, the intermediate or occasional designer, Frontbase Image to Icon may be of use.
