Family Tree Legends
Clean, intuitive interface. The Matching feature is wonderful!

Pros: Buttons on the right side of the detail page for each individual make it very easy to add facts, notes, name variations, etc.
The Matching feature allows you to connect to the GenCircles website from within the program and match your records with other people researching the same lines. When a match is found, you can very easily merge the new research into your own. You're even allowed the option of choosing which facts, children, spouses, etc, you want to merge into your data.
This connection to and use of the GenCircles site is free - in the near future, there may be a fee for people who don't have the software to use the site.
Finally, having the To Do lists integrated into the Notes section and readily available in the detail page for each individual is a great time saver. Being able to set a Type for each To Do item is also very productive (I use Research, Email Follow-up, Post Query etc - you can create any that are meaningful to you).
I upgrade from Family Tree and found this product to be a significant improvement.
Cons: You also have the chance to maintain a backup of your data online but the method for doing this is confusing and caused delays. I'm also not sure how, without that backup, my data is uploaded to their site for the Matching feature.

Family Tree Legends
FTL is the best I've tried!
by: hitrish

Pros: Hi everyone. I've tried several ASP versions of gen software and FTM 11 when it first came out. Although all seemed reasonable, when I found Family Tree Legends (version 2.something), I was thrilled! It wasn't perfect back then, but support and service was very accessible and very interested not only in helping me, but in obtaining feedback for upgrading the product. I've since upgraded to 5.0 and love it. It's pretty, intuitive, works really well and has everything I need. I love, love, love it!
Cons: Not much wrong with it that I can tell. [[My problem is, way back when, I tried to import my cousin's whole GEDCOM file (which included hundred upon hundreds of entries, notes and interconnectedness to my fledgling but pretty full attempt at what I knew about my family (about 500 names). The merge, originally done in the old clunker Family Tree MAKER 11.[something], ended in a muddled, tangled, complex mess. A while back, I tried (with Family Tree Legends (earlier version) to fix the mess by 'finding duplicates' but alas, the problem was too tough for this baby, too. I long past resigned myself to start again and retype everything from scratch and properly. So, in view of that...]] I guess the only thing I can say I wish they'd fix (and I haven't complained so this isn't really fair) is the fact that only one instance of the Family Tree Legends can be open at a time. With my messy situation, I have to have an old and a new file open in order to see the old mess and type into the new. Right now, I can work with two computers with two different files open (I know, it's really a mess!), which is what I'm working on now... Moral of my missive? Be very careful when 'merging' files as it can easily get screwed up beyond repair! Oh, and pick up a copy of Family Tree Legends! If you like this download, you'll LOVE the new 5.0 for a very low retail price!

Family Tree Legends
Only good for Americans
by: Junpei
on 10-May-2005 06:34:10 AM
Pros: Good layout. Good styling. Easy to use and update.
Cons: Although a good program with some useful features, I found the online database to be absolutely useless. It's obviously a program for Americans as the online database is American only, no good if you aren't a Yankee. There is also no way to print out an entire family tree on a large A3 page - you will end up with hundreds of A4 pages that need to be stuck together!

Pros: Nice modern look and feel. Simple entry forms and nice graphical reports.
Cons: Can enter notes but these don't appear on reports (I used Facts instead). It's not free!
